Description

Explore the beautiful scenery of west Scotland from this property, with woodland and coastal walks both available in the area.

This stunning B listed country house, dating back to 1817, was once the seat of the McGorrie Lamonts and has huge historical importance throughout the area. Fabulously restored and divided into apartments(refs SYYE, SYYF, SYYG and SYYH), Knockdow House offers a superb level of holiday accommodation and is located on a 6000-acre estate on the Cowal Peninsula. Throughout the estate there are beautiful landscaped gardens, ponds, river, fishing loch (fly fishing by prior arrangement) and woodland and coastal walks, with a diverse range of fauna and flora. Wildlife is abundant, with red squirrel, otters, roe deer and large variety of birdlife, including hen harriers, buzzards and eagles. Seals, otters and porpoises are also seen regularly throughout the area. Located on Argyll’s Secret Coast, Knockdow House is tucked away in a small corner of Argyll on the west coast of Scotland and is an area of stunning natural beauty, with hills, glens, rugged coastlines, white beaches, clear waters and ancient forests. Argyll’s Secret Coast is packed with places to visit and things to do, and sailors, walkers, cyclists and artists are all drawn to this area for its natural beauty. Explore the forests and coastline by foot, bike, kayak or boat. The whole area is steeped in Highland history and dotted with ruins, castles and ancient sites. Close by is Dunoon, which has a good selection of shops and restaurants, a cinema and swimming pool. Dunoon is of course the home of the Cowal Gathering, one of the largest and most spectacular Highland games in the world. There is a fantastic range of outdoor leisure activities in the area, including sailing, fishing, windsurfing, speed boat tours, quad biking, clay shooting and much more. Just a short drive away is Portavadie, with its marina and the ferry over to Tarbert, where visitors can explore the Kintyre Peninsula, with ferries to the islands of Islay, Juray and Arran. Beach 200 yards. Shop and pub 2 miles.

An excellent and stylish accomodation with perfect facilities, exactly as decribed, in a really nice environment. A carefully and lovingly restored manor house with a long and notable history with many links to Scotch history. A perfect starting point to explore the underestimated west coast and the cities of Scotland. There is an easy and direct link via ferry boat and train to go to Glasgow and Endinburgh. Oban, Inveraray Castle and much more could be easily reached by relaxed car trips. The internet description shows reality, it is really like the pictures. All our expectations had been exceeded. A very kind and friendly host family completes this perfect impression. We definitely will come back.
