English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

This lovely barn conversion offers character and contemporary interiors while being an ideal base for exploring the local countryside.

Located in the quiet hamlet of Patchole, these converted detached holiday barns (HSSW and HRRG), offer a combination of both character and contemporary design. Spacious accommodation goes hand in hand with very good facilities and all the modern conveniences guests may require during their stay. Both barns overlook the courtyard of the owner’s farmhouse with sitting-out areas. Patchole is set in the heart of the North Devon countryside and is well suited for exploring this area. At Croyde and Woolacombe, some of the best and cleanest surf beaches in the country can be found, as well as many smaller coves and bays. Barnstaple, the regional town, offers a range of shops. Shop 1 mile, pub 2 miles.

Open-plan living room with sofa bed (alternative sleeping only)/dining room with slate floor and kitchen area. Double bedroom with 5ft bed and TV. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. First floor: Spacious sitting room with sofa bed (alternative sleeping only), beams and wooden floor. Double bedroom with 6ft zip & link bed (can be twin beds on request), TV and en-suite shower with toilet.

The cottage was just as we remembered it last September (2016) The welcome pack was very useful especially after a long drive And the dogs also enjoyed their welcome bonio Dogs thoroughly loved the use of the paddock The cottage is well positioned for visiting all areas of north Devon, south Devon isn't too far for a good long day out. The wifi/broadband at the cottage isn't brilliant and wifi call on phone if with O2 is a must. You struggle to watch iPlayer on devices Will be returning very soon

Lovely cottage, great base for exploring North Devon. Although there are no amenities within walking distance there are plenty of places to visit within a very short drive. Great for dogs with a nearby enclosed paddock where our 9 month old pup enjoyed exploring and watching the chickens in their pen. The cottage itself was very well equipped with all the essentials plus lots more. The home baked cake and freshly laid eggs were a lovely welcome after a long drive from our home in Northamptonshire. Would definately recommend and would happily stay again.

Perfect week away in a well equipped and designed barn conversion, in a lovely peaceful setting. Clive and Pauline are such natural hosts, friendly and welcoming, and are on hand if you need help or advice. The little personal touches on arrival set the tone for a great week ahead, thank you. After long days out it felt like coming home each evening, the barn is very comfortable. Lots to do in the area, great and varied beaches, outdoor activities, gardens, walks and pretty villages. We would have no hesitation in recommending this barn to friends and family and would love to come back in the future to explore the area further.

We had a wonderful time at The Shippen and our hosts were lovely and welcoming. The cottage has been renovated to a high standard and has everything you need for a break away from home. Location-wise, it is lovely and peaceful and well-situated to get out and explore the area, although we did find driving around the narrow, winding and hilly roads a bit challenging at times! We had a super time at The Shippen and would certainly go back again.

A good place to stay to explore Exmoor and the coast. The cottage was fine for a young family although a bit short of space in the bedrooms for the cot. The milk and eggs on arrival were much appreciated. Also useful was the 'room' off the kitchen where you can hang wet weather gear/beach wear to dry. I would recommend The Shippen as a place to stay.

We had a fantastic holiday at The Shippen. So much to do around the surrounding area in North Devon. The owners are lovely people who make you feel very welcome and were always there if we needed any advice or information on anything. Would definitely recommend staying here.
