A charming characterful cottage in an excellent location with easy access to Edinburgh and fine coastal walking on the doorstep.

The property has no internet which is an issue in this day and age - had to leave earley as I needed to work from home which was not possible from the property. The landlady was also very grumpy e.g. made a derogatory comment to my wife because I couldn't follow the instructions to the property, was very reticent to allow our car into the courtyard to unload the car, etc.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your comments. I do not and never have offered Wi-Fi for the property. The Agency or I would have advised accordingly prior to booking if this were a prerequisite for you. However, I welcome your feedback and agree Wi-Fi would be beneficial, so I am looking into providing this. There was a real concern about the size of your 4x4 vehicle being able to pass under the gate into the courtyard. Normally, there is no need for this access as the property is 30 yards from the parking space. I was very disappointed with the low score for cleanliness and comfort. The property is always spotless on arrival. I was dismayed at the dreadful state it was left in upon your departure. The overall score is harsh, not reflective of the Cottage and not in keeping with the majority of happy guests, many of whom return year after year.

We had a very comfortable stay at the Retreat Cottage, which is tucked away in a very quiet part of North Berwick , but only a five minute walk from North Berwick Railway station, should you wish to visit any of the attractions of Edinburgh ( approx 1/2 hour away by comfortable train). It is only a short walk from the beach and seafront and the 'Seabird Centre', which has a cafe serving a range of local foods with some lovely fresh fish dishes. It is also not far from the town High Street with a range of shops, cafes and galleries. The cottage was supplied with everything we needed for our stay and comfortably warm, given that we didn't have the best weather in October. Dirleton castle with its lovely gardens was only a few miles away and we were also able to visit Rosslyn Chapel with its amazingly ornate stonework. Mrs Gilbert, who caretakes, was very welcoming and most helpful, providing some lovely flowers to enjoy during our stay. Altogether an excellent holiday.

The cottage needs updating a welcome pack would have been nice although we did receive a very warm welcome when we arrived

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner. I don't provide a welcome pack although for visitors who do not have a car, my mother will, if requested, provide essentials for their arrival. The cottage is fully equipped with new, modern appliances. It is a traditional old cottage, has a unique charm and the interior is in keeping with this as shown on the website photographs.

Situated in a quiet area but within easy reach of the town. Peaceful setting. It is an old building but comfortable and well equipped. We found the location of the cottage difficult to find as some of the road markings are incorrect.
