Description

The Old Stables is a brilliant base for exploring the area. After a day out, retreat back here and enjoy the views.

In the quaint village of Leigh, just south of the picturesque abbey town of Sherborne in north west Dorset, this converted listed barn is set in an L-shape around a courtyard on one side and with lovely country views over Thomas Hardy’s famous Blackmoor Vale on the other. It offers an excellent holiday base to explore north west Dorset and south Somerset. it has been renovated to a high standard with exposed beams, is tastefully furnished, and has use of a communal games room with a snooker table, table football and darts. Though set on the edge of an organic farm (but in a non working part), the owner would be delighted to show guests around the farm, which is only a short walk away from the cottages. There is also a small flock of sheep and chickens in the cider orchard close by. There is superb country walking on the doorstep, a village shop within walking distance, golf nearby and water activities such as fishing, yachting, boating, sailing and canoeing at Halstock Reservoir. Within easy driving one can visit the Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum with its prototype of Concorde, the Haynes Motor Museum with its fascinating selection of vintage motor cars, and Montacute House and Gardens (one of the many historic houses in the area). To the north into south Somerset, spend days exploring Glastonbury with its famous and enchanting Tor, Wells cathedral city and Bishops Palace, the famous Cheddar Gorge and Caves, and the Georgian City of Bath with its delightful Roman baths, Pump Room, museums and of course shops and restaurants. Travel south and the spectacular World Heritage Jurassic Coast and Chesil Beach, with the popular seaside resorts of Lyme Regis, Bridport and Weymouth, all offer many attractions, sights and activities to enjoy, or more locally Sherborne Abbey and Castle (5 miles) and Dorchester market town (12 miles) are not too far. Shop 400 yards, pub 1 mile.

Large, beamed living room. Large, beamed, well-equipped kitchen/dining room with electric range (for cooking), TV and tiled floor. Double bedroom. Twin bedroom. Bunk bedroom. Shower room with double shower cubicle and toilet. First floor: Double bedroom with 5ft bed and en-suite bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

We loved this cottage with amazing views across the Dorset countryside. It was perfect for our family for a weekend break. The size and quality of the beautiful building was very good. Liked the fact there were three bedrooms on the ground floor which was great with small children and the large kitchen was great for all of us to eat together. Close to lots of great places to visit. Lovely owner who told us the history of the farm and its buildings. Best of all was the peace and quiet and the beautiful setting. Will definitely return .

Great open welcome from Chris, for whom nothing was a problem. Fantastic place for a family get together. The accommodation was enjoyed and appreciated by all, and far outpassed the previous experiences that we have had for similar types of rental. Will be first call for future family gatherings !

Wonderful cottage. I'd be giving ten out of ten except the online reception isn't great for incoming texts and emails. Also, I think it must be an immersion heater situation because the water ran cold after one bath. But the cottage, the internal comfort of it, the fabulous kitchen (the type you live in and open a bottle in and talk for hours in), it was all exemplary. Nice owners too.

As a family we have visited Dorset for the last 10years usually in farm type houses and have never been disappointed, this year was well up to standard and very enjoyable.

A very tranquil stay and lovely break in Dorset. The old stables is a great location, well laid out and well equipped. Leigh is so quiet, peaceful and beautiful, nearby Sherborne is a really nice town and the Jurassic coast is just a short drive away. All in all a highly recommended place to stay.

A wonderful setting - lovely sitting out of an evening with countryside views watching the sun go down and enjoying the peace. Very comfortable, with nice furnishings and good beds. It was a great location for exploring northwards to Wells and Glastonbury and southwards to Lyme and Lulworth. Would love to revisit

We're frequent visitors to Dorset and we've stayed in many cottages. The Old Stables is one of the best we've stayed in and has everything you'd want and is in a great spot for all the local attractions. The owner was really great and showed the kids around the working farm. We all had a great time.
