Description

A period home suitable for families and dog-lovers just a 2-minute walk from shops and pubs, and within easy reach of beaches.

In a peaceful setting, with scenic walks from the door, this charming, detached, 17th-century, character holiday cottage is conveniently located within the quaint village of Shorwell, only a 2-minute walk from the historic 14th century church, shop and pub. This period home is suitable for families and dog-lovers, and offers comfortable accommodation with features such as beams, tiled floors and feature fire surrounds. The large living room, on the first floor, enjoys an open fire set within an inglenook and wooden flooring with rugs. Leading from the farmhouse-style kitchen is a large utility room which is ideal for drying, as a boot store or for dogs to sleep in, and has a stable door leading to the garden. On two levels, the lawned garden is accessed by steep steps or a sloping path, which surrounds the garden for access, and has a table and bench seating for dining al fresco. This is a great place for spotting various wildlife such as red squirrels and many birds such as buzzards. The Isle of Wight has a wealth of footpaths and bridleways. Discover an amazing variety of scenery and many award-winning beaches, many of them with golden sands, as well as coves and bays to explore. Enjoy a cream tea at one of the various tea rooms located in historic villages such as Brighstone, which is less than a 15-minute drive, or Godshill and Olde Shanklin. Whilst some of the furnishings could best be described as "tired" we felt comfortable in that we did not feel the need to keep too close an eye on our three young children and one dog which might otherwise have been the case! It would also have been nice had there been a visitors' book to enable us to suggest restaurants, places of interest etc that others might have liked (we would have appreciated the chance to read of earlier tenant's experiences). There were however three negatives which, though they by no means spoiled an excellent holiday, ought perhaps be looked into: 1 The fitted sheets in the main and children's bedrooms did not fit properly: 2 There was an unpleasant smell in the second double bedroom (possibly dog urine) - an attempt had been made to hide this by providing a "room scenter" with limited success but I don't feel we should blame the owner for this! 3 Inspite of our being told that "dustbin day" was on Tuesdays the bins were not emptied and we unable to dispose of all our rubbish satisfactorily before we left. Don't let this put you off though as Inspite of this the house and location were excellent.

It is a lovely cottage but was a little hard to find. Other than that the accommodation was clean, well stocked for a family with toys, books and TV. We would definitely stay again.
