Description

Converted nave of a 1766 Grade II* listed church with original font and pulpit. Country lanes ideal for cycling and walking close by.

For a truly unique and memorable self catering holiday experience, The Old Church is a property that is hard to beat. On the site of a medieval chapel, (an incumbant is recorded as early as 1355), the present church was designed by Thomas Farnolls Pritchard, and is of sufficient architectural merit that it was included in the guides of the architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner. Situated in the quiet hamlet of Hopton Cangeford, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this professionally converted nave of a 1766 Grade II* listed church still has many of the original features such as squire’s pews, oak dado panelling, font and pulpit. The mix of 21st century décor and facilities such as flat screen TVs in both the living room and bedroom, a fully fitted kitchen with hand-painted tiles and underfloor heating blends effortlessly with the original stain glass windows and architecture. The double bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom, tiled extensively with travertine and granite, providing both a shower enclosure and a Jacuzzi spa bath. If you love unusual properties then The Old Church ticks all of the boxes. You can even dine by candlelight in the vestry! You will never stay anywhere like this again and it’s a true gem hidden away in the Shropshire countryside. A once in a lifetime experience! The quiet country lanes surrounding The Old Church are ideal for walking and cycling. Just 4 miles from Ludlow, surrounded by the unspoilt hills of the Welsh Marches, this historic market town offers a medieval castle, fine restaurants and, in September, the famous Ludlow Food Festival. Visit Tenbury Wells, Ironbridge, Stokesay Castle and the breathtaking Long Mynd. Shop, pub and restaurant 4 miles.

Ground floor: Living room with double sofa bed (for alternative sleeping)/kitchen with tiled floor. Shower room with toilet. First floor: 1 double bedroom with en-suite Jacuzzi bath, shower cubicle and toilet.

Gas underfloor central heating, gas, electricity, bed linen and towels included. 50’’ Freesat plasma TV. Blu-ray home cinema system and small library. Gas hob. Electric oven. Microwave. Shared utility room with washing machine. Dishwasher. Freezer. Wi-fi. Shared enclosed, lawned garden. Patio with sitting-out area and furniture. Parking (1 car). Cycle store. Welcome pack. SUI GENERIS! An amazing conversion resulting in a (semi) transformation conducive to its original use. The first floor is intriguingly "suspended" from the centre of the nave, the rental part. The climate controlled underfloor heating kept an ambient temperature throughout our stay, making it difficult to go out, apart from comfort and the complete serenity. Most charming and hospitable hosts, not forgetting Benson, Tizzy, Pudding et al, all got on famously with our Weimardoodle. Can only echo other reviews, what could anyone expect from a grade 2 listed church built in 1766...how anyone could find fault...a truly memorable and unusual 40th birthday treat for my partner!

We really enjoyed staying here. It was quirky which we both liked. The owners were most interesting and turned out to be good company as well. We described the whole week as "a great experience" - we loved it.

A RARE RETREAT AWAY FROM THE CITY, THAT WAS A UNIQUE AND LOVELY EXPERIENCE. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN PEACEFUL TRANQUILITY IN A VERY SPECIAL PLACE AND SETTING - THEN LOOK ELSEWHERE. IF THE SOUND OF SILENCE, EXCELLENT CREATURE COMFORTS AND FRIENDLY HOSTS APPEAL TO YOU, THEN LOOK NO FURTHER. AN UNFORGETTABLE HOLIDAY.

We knew it would be quirky but we didn't expect such a lovely location and the amenities we second to none, even if we set the smoke alarm when cooking our steaks.
