Had a short stay using Paxford as a base to visit the local area. The cottage was well equipped and comfortable but a little tired. Did not meet the owners but had no problems so did not need to. The cottage was reasonably priced for the area and the time of year. We would use again for a short stay if the opportunity arose.

We stayed in this pretty cottage in early October. Old Chapel Cottage is ideal for a peaceful stay in the countryside. The location is ideal, tucked away down a quiet lane. It’s very private, but easily accessible. Well situated for exploring all the nearby towns. The accommodation is furnished to a good standard. The rooms are a good size and both bedrooms have ensuites. The beds and furniture were clean and comfortable. We didn’t get to meet the owners, but then everything we needed was provided. The welcoming little touches were appreciated - cake in the fridge, tea, coffee, toiletries, fresh flowers etc. The log fire was laid for us on arrival; there was a generous supply of logs too. It was very cosy with the fire lit. The chapel windows add to the character, with views over the picturesque countryside. Outside there’s a private little garden. Although a lovely cottage, there were a few niggles. I would have rated this higher if there hadn’t been some maintenance issues. The kitchen is well equipped, but lighting was poor as two of the spotlight bulbs weren’t working. Only one light over the hob worked, (which didn’t help when cooking), and the light in the fridge wasn’t working either. Just routine jobs, that were somehow overlooked. Everything else was in good order. All in all the accommodation was very good value. The free wi-fi was excellent. Tv reception was good too, and there’s also a phone. We very much enjoyed our stay in this beautiful cottage.

We booked this cottage as we were looking for somewhere that welcomed dogs as my mum has 2 toy poodles and my husband and I also have a small dog. We also had a wedding to attend close by. Another reason we were attracted to the cottage was the fact it was a 5 star. Having stayed in a few 5 star cottages in the past we thought we knew what to expect. Sadly we were disappointed. Although bedding was clean, fresh towels were left and work surfaces had been wiped down, the cottage had not been properly cleaned in a very long time. Thick dust and cobwebs covered curtain poles, back and sides of bedside tables, toilet bases etc. There was dog hair on the sofas and carpets and the bedrooms did not smell pleasant. Over all appearance was also slightly tatty. Not a 5 star in our opinion. However after bringing this to the attention of the owners they did what they could to resolve any problems. The building itself is lovely with large chapel windows and character throughout. There is a smart TV with access to Netflix etc and very good WiFi. The garden is also completely secure even for small dogs which was very handy. There is a lovely pub just over the road which we would highly recommend. There are lots of lovely Cotswold villages close by such as Broadway and Bourton-on-the-Water.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We do appreciate the guest’s positive feedback about the character of the building, the garden, the great Pub over the road etc. - it is a beautiful Cottage in a lovely area. The Old Chapel is rated as 5 Star by our Agents - this despite our specific request that it be 4 Star; the cottage was inspected by the Agents recently and they decided on a 5 Star rating. One of the reasons we prefer 4 Star is that unlike many Owners, we do welcome dogs and pets - the downside of which is that it is difficult to locate every dog hair etc. after their stay; we did not notice any smell - unpleasant or otherwise - on the day of their arrival. We would also point out that normally we accept 1 or maybe 2 pets but we did make an exception in this case and allowed 3 dogs. We are glad that the guest appreciated the clean bedding, fresh towels etc. but we do not accept that the cottage had not been “properly cleaned in a very long time”- the cottages are the subject of regular and rigorous cleaning and in this case, quite recent inspections by the Agents who rated it accordingly. As to cobwebs - spiders are pretty hyper-active in old timbered buildings - the bad news is that spiders webs are hard to keep at bay - the good news is that flies etc. are few and far between...! But we do acknowledge that some items of the cleaning were not totally up-to-scratch in this case. We were particularly disappointed that the first we heard about the guests complaints came via the Agents with an accompanying dossier of photos etc. which seems to have been assiduously compiled very soon after arriving at the cottage. When the guest arrived, she was greeted by my wife who specifically said to her that if she had any problems at all we live on the spot and are always happy to - and much prefer to - deal with any “niggles” wherever possible straightaway - particularly when they are of a relatively petty nature. We would finish as we started – disappointed.

The cottage was in an ideal location for visiting many National Trust properties and other places of interest. Apart from the pub across the road which served rather overpriced and pretentious food, there is very little in Paxford itself. However, Chipping Campden is only a five minutes drive away and has a large number of very good eateries.

Perfect cottage in gorgeous countryside, great base for some lovely walks. Dog friendly which is a bonus. Anything you need has been catered for and if you fancy an amazing meal it's 2 minutes walk from the Churchill Arms .

Welcoming email from the owner appreciated as well as the little extra goodies. The Old Chapel is very comfortable, in a quiet location, and within easy reach of many favourite Cotwolds places.

The Old Chapel is an attractive cottage in a quiet and secluded location. It was warm and welcoming on a cold winter weekend. The bedrooms are generously sized and each has its own bathroom. The upstairs living room is enhanced by views of the surrounding village and countryside. There is a well designed and equipped kitchen. The nearby pub, the Churchill is excellent. We enjoyed staying there very much. The cottage was clean and the fire was laid when we arrived. Perhaps the only criticism is that the kitchen and bathrooms are beginning to look old fashioned.

Certainly a great location for the Cotswolds and surrounding area, but we found the property badly in need of a refurb, unclean and in need of a good scrub, and all the clutter ie photo prints on walls ,clutter of ornaments books cd's on window ledges etc would be better and cleaner removed, should not be misled by the log fire, electrics, another nightmare 5star not in our opinion.not again thank you.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We would firstly point out that the Old Chapel was inspected only a few months ago by the agents with no particular adverse comments but having had a good look over the property we would agree to some extent that the cottage is showing a certain amount of “end-of-season” tiredness which is not an excuse but is perhaps not really surprising after what has been a virtually non-stop season With regard to the “clutter of ornaments, books etc” we feel this is largely a matter of taste as a lot of people seem to like the “casual” informality As to being “misled by the log fire, electrics, another nightmare” we do not understand the problem as the open log fire works well - it may just be a case of knowing what you’re doing with the fire, The electrics have all been tested & are completely in working order. It might also be worth mentioning that at a rent of probably not much more than £20 per person per day we feel that this rental represents pretty good value We would also mention that - as stated on our “Welcome” information package - we would much prefer to hear about any problems at the time as it gives us the opportunity to rectify any problems We would re-iterate that we are always disappointed to receive adverse comments & we will always try to address relevant problems. The Old Chapel is currently receiving a good "going-over" which we believe will forestall any possible such comments in the future.
