Built as an impressive French-style chateau, the museum houses a magnificent collection of fine and decorative art. Hexham (with stately abbey) is a good day trip out, as well as the splendid cathedral city of Durham, 15 miles. Very well appointed cottage. Lots of space, and everything high quality. There is the added bonus of a large garden and ponds with a snooker room, and relaxation area open to guests. The area is picturesque and unspoilt, with lots of walking from the cottage. The Black Bull is and excellent pub and a good place to eat, but is closed from Mon to Weds. There are no other equivalent places to eat near by. High and Low Force waterfalls are within easy driving distance, as are the South Tynedale Railway at Alston and the Bowes museum.
