English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

From the Napoleonic era, this lovely cottage has wood floors, set on the Royal Military Canal, ideal for canoeing.

Situated on the Royal Military Canal and beside Iden Lock, The Lock Cottage dates back to the Napoleonic era, when it was used as officers’ quarters. The lock itself was completed in 1808 whilst this detached, single-storey holiday cottage was built in 1824. Iden Lock is no longer a working lock; the last barge passed through it in 1909, the receipt for which was signed by Spencer Catt who had been the lock keeper since 1890. He was the great great great grandfather of The Lock Cottage’s current owner. Guests can paddle their canoe from Iden Lock to West Hythe or hire rowing boats at Hythe. Fishing and walking available. Camber Sands 5 miles. Rye, Appledore and shops 3 miles.

Living room with oak floor. Dining room with open fire. Kitchen with butler sink and tiled floor. Two double bedrooms, one with wood-burning stove, one with ornamental fireplace. Single bedroom with ornamental fireplace. Step up to bathroom with shower over corner bath, toilet and tiled floor.

Finding the cottage is dufficult as it's well hidden behind the hedge & getting onto the main road is very tricky. That said a peaceful comfortable cottage.

A comfortable stay in an old cottage next to the Military Canal lock where it joins the River Rother. At times there is some background noise from the lock pumps, but this was not intrusive in the cottage. The cottage wi-fi was a bit hit and miss. We did have problems contacting the key-holder as an initial "I'll get back to you" was followed by two days of silence despite many phone calls and texts, and the lack of response became very stressful by the evening before our start date. Also on the start date itself we had a phone call stating that it was necessary to delay our arrival until 5p.m. Overall, this was far from an ideal start to the holiday, and is the reason for giving an overall score of 5, but there were no subsequent problems. Access to the canal and river for canoe launching isn't obvious as the banks are steep. However across the road bridge towards Rye is an (unofficial?) access to the river bank, used by fishermen. About 50m south of here is a short but more accessible section of bank. However our canoe remained unused this trip!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thanks for the points you have mentioned. The delay on response for key will be looked into and adjusted so this does not happen again. As for the two hours set back on arrival I was there that day, and the out going family were under the impression that they where leaving on the Saturday not the Friday, so unfortunately they then had to leave unexpectedly. This did not leave myself and my help much time to get the Lock Cottage ready to our usual high standards with out delaying these guests. I did however tell them they were welcome to stay longer on the Sunday that they where due to leave. Some things do go wrong and we fix them and move on, I hope this puts people's minds at rest, please be assured you're in good hands with us.

Great location and great property. Don't rely on the wifi if you need it! Property is very clean and well equipped, with games and books too. The Jolly Roger was not flying, so don't rely on it to find the property!

Cottage was nice and close to river for wildlife. However, it is very close to main road on bend( although there is a mirror to see the bend.) The main issue is accessibility. The entrance is next to small pull in used by fishermen, and it can be extremely difficult to get into the drive when their cars are parked there. We had a large car and there were a few occasions where we couldn't park it on the drive, as fishermen had parked blocking the entrance, and on one occasion double parked making it impossible. I would stay here again only if this issue was addressed.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I am very sorry that this situation has arisen, the Cottage was built in 1824 and like many places in Britain, cars and traffic came afterwards. I do not own the ground in front of the drive therefore I cannot enforce no parking there, I will however put up notices saying that it is an access and please do not bloke it. I would very much like to have a 30 MPH speed limit imposed but thus far the local council are not playing ball.

Lovely location, the driveway is a little tight to navigate, especially when vehicles are parked in the small parking area at the front of the property, in addition the entrance is on a blind bend, there is a mirror to look out for traffic from the right but nothing to the left, it is a case of winding down your windows, listening for approaching traffic and then moving off, it is a national speed limit road so the vehicles can be approaching pretty fast. The location is rural so you need transport to get around however there are plenty of places to explore nearby and it is a nice peaceful location to retreat to at the end of the day.

What a pleasant surprise. Even better than the photos. We arrived (early) to fresh flowers and chocolate cake. The garden area is fantastic and the views of the river and lock amazing. Such a lovely spot for a few days. Everything you need is there. A couple of comfy garden chairs would be a great addition. We hope to go back! My 2yr old and 70yr Dad loved it equally.

The cottage was very comfortable. The only comment I would make is that it is not now flying the Jolly Roger flag (or any other flag) even though the directions stated so. I found it difficult to find at first since Iden lock is not well indicated either.

Lovely weekend. Quirky cottage, lovely atmosphere, on a main road but not too noisy. None of us found it first time, directions could have been a bit clearer. Main room with vaulted ceiling was perfect for lazy evenings talking, playing games and sharing a bottle of wine.

A great cottage in a great location. Just a shame that the cottage was freezing cold when we arrived at 8.00 pm on a Friday night, despite advising our arrival time and asking in advance for the heating to be turned on.
