Description

This property is brimming with history and character, as it was once the granary in the steading of Duntulm Castle.

Historical base

Monkstadt became the seat of the Clan Macdonald in 1730 when they abandoned Duntulm Castle. Nearby are servants’ houses and a steading which includes a granary stable, cartshed and a mill with horse walk. Monkstadt has played a romantic role in highland history. The stables and Granary have been sympathetically converted into first class holiday accommodation. This single storey corner property, accessed via a 1 mile track, is ideal for exploring the mysterious Isle of Skye. Flora Macdonalds monument and ruined Duntulm Castle are nearby. The Quirang and Old Man of Storr encourage walkers and climbers whilst the beauty, wildlife and various outdoor pursuits appeal to all groups. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

17 steps to entrance. All on one level: Living/dining room/kitchen. 1 double bedroom. Shower room with toilet.

Electric central heating and electricity included (by meter reading October-April). Bed linen and towels included. Stereo/CD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Washer/dryer. Garden furniture. Parking (1 car). No children.

Have stayed before and nothing has changed as the property still requires all the tlc previous reviews have highlighted. But we would stay here again without a moments hesitation as the location is superb and we feel this compensates for the flaws, most of which are minor.

Condition of floor coverings and lounge suites well below expectations. Additional charge for power was not expected and proved to be expensive on a prepaid meter. Long drive from the main road was in very poor condition with very deep pot holes. Our feeling is that the place is long overdue for a complete refurbishment.

Very nice location, however, the access is via a gravel road with pot holes that you thought you are driving on the moon. Not good if you drive a sports car. Nice and clean - good location, just next to Uig. Lights in the kitchen didn't worked.

Firstly, lets get the elephant in the room to show itself ....this is a former granary, it's fairly remote and a little way off the 'main' road. If you are travelling to find some peace and quiet, you should not be unsurprised that the road is unmade, I may have preferred to drive it in my Landrover Defender, but our VW Golf, driven appropriately was fine, you just need to take it slow. If you are tall you may find the headroom in the bathroom and the bedroom an issue, but again it's a converted building into the pitch of the roof, we found it characterful and charming, just be aware. Otherwise we had a great time, the views are stunning and the overall decor is clean and tidy, for the price we paid one could not complain at all. There is just enough cutlery, crockery etc for two people and everything is provided, bedding, towels etc. We loved it and will return at some point. Some notes to the owners : The sofas need replacing, or at least new cushions, the carpets need a clean - beige in a remote building is maybe not ideal, the laminate in the kitchen is well past it's sell by date and it's disconcerting to walk on as it flexes up and down. The kitchen and living room lighting wasn't working, not an issue for us as it was light until - well forever in June, but I note this has been an issue for some time. For someone not used to a key electric meter, the instructions aren't written terribly well I am technical but was foxed for a while - does one press the blue button on the meter or not ( the helpful girl in the post office in Uig helped me out ) .. The light on the outside door is broken ( looks like for some time) . Outside needs a weed, if the weather had been kind in June we would not have been able to use the picnic table or sit on the bench ( both need a coat of preservative too ) ... Please look to invest in a new TV. A folder on the table as one arrives with clear instructions on the meter use, and how to operate the appliances and TV/Satellite etc would be lovely to see.
