Tucked away in a rural location, The Granary is surrounded by the owners’ working arable farmland. Located just 1½ miles from the village of Long Melford, famous for its numerous antique shops, it makes an ideal base from which to explore the quaint villages and market towns of Suffolk, including Lavenham, Clare and Bury St Edmunds. The nearby market town of Sudbury (3 miles), one-time home of the artist Thomas Gainsborough, has a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants, a theatre and good rail links to London and Colchester. The property is also convenient for Newmarket, a day at the races and Cambridge, the city famous for its colleges, museums, botanic gardens and art galleries, you can also try your hand at punting on the River Cam. The Granary is ideally located to explore nearby Constable Country or head slightly further afield to the Suffolk Heritage Coast, where you will find the seaside gems of Southwold and Aldeburgh. Shop and pub 1 mile.

This is a beautiful cottage in a lovely part of the world. It's clean, spacious and comfortable and well equipped. My friends and I stayed for a long weekend to celebrate my upcoming wedding and had a great time canoing on the river in nearby Sudbury and exploring the area. Unfortunately, the trip was rather spoiled by the owner of the cottage who made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome before we arrived and 'dropped by' while we were there to check we were being honest about the number of people in the house. I can only imagine she has had a number of bad experiences with guests in order to act in the manner she did with us, for absolutely no good reason at all. I was subjected to what felt like the Spanish Inquisition on the morning we were due to check in - how many people were staying? How many men and how many women? How many children? This is not a party house, this is not a venue etc. She seemed convinced we were having some sort of event at the house or would be misusing it somehow. All we really wanted (the group consisted of 30/40 yr old men and women with young children) was to escape the chaos of the city, enjoy the countryside and relax. We canoed on the local river, we cooked and made jigsaw puzzles, played with our children and visited a local steakhouse. Hardly the playboy mansion. When the owner came by on the first morning she thought we had too many cars to be honest people and asked again how many we were. She suggested that I had an issue with her when I, while holding a two month old baby and still chewing my breakfast, explained that I found it uncomfortable and introsive to be accused of lying by a woman we were playing a lot of money to in an attempt to have a relaxing weekend away. Perhaps the owner is just abrasive and blunt by nature (is she in the right line of work?). She did bring a fruit cake with her and attempt an apology on her second visit. BUT we will not be visiting again and nor would we recommend to anyone. This is a beautiful part of the world, everyone should visit. Just don't stay here.

    Response from:

Response on the behalf of the owner- I am pleased that you enjoyed the location of The Granary. It is perfect for exploring with lots of places to visit. I completely respect my guest’s privacy and do try to be as unobtrusive as possible, but on the other hand, I am always around if needed. I am friendly and helpful – pretty easy going too, and I always greet my guests on arrival with a welcome cake. I keep a high standard and provide a friendly and helpful service to ensure an enjoyable stay for all of my visitors; you will see this from all other reviews. The Agency Booking Terms & Conditions do state that guests cannot arrange for visitors to the property without prior consent of the Owner. I am more than happy for guests to have additional family members join them during their stay as long as the maximum occupancy is not exceeded and I am made aware in advance.

Very pleasant place to stay. Nice and quiet but not far from Sudbury to get groceries or eat out

We had a very nice stay at the Granery in July. The house is huge with a large living room, nice kitchen area and 4 bedrooms. Two large bedrooms are upstairs and two are attached to the living room. One is a large double with ensuite, the other is a tiny single box room. All the beds here are very firm, too hard for us and we found them quite uncomfortable. On arrival there was a large fruit cake and two bottles of wine left out for us, which we thought was a nice touch and greatly appreciated. The house is very well equipped, however there is no tumble dryer which is a big negative. There is a rotary dryer in the garden which was fine for us as we were fortunate to have glorious weather.
