English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Set on the owner’s organic farm, guests can buy local produce from the very grounds that The Farmhouse lies within.

Standing amidst wonderful countryside close to the North Yorkshire Moors, these holiday cottages are in a magnificent location for a combined sea and country holiday. Secluded and tranquil, guests are free to explore the woodland walk, the area is home to a variety of wildlife - including wild deer, owls, hares, etc. The properties are set on a small traditional organic farm, which grows vegetables and organic soft fruit. Guests are welcome to purchase the organic products grown here directly from the friendly owners. The properties are environmentally friendly, heated by a unique wood-burning/solar heating system, and many of the practices throughout the farm and properties use natural resources for their day-to-day running. An indoor heated swimming pool, sauna and hard tennis court shared between other properties, a small gym, as well as a children’s play area complete the facilities on offer. The beautiful North Yorkshire Moors are a delight to explore either on foot or by car, or alternatively, the steam railway runs along stunning scenery through many unspoilt villages including Goathland (‘Aidensfield’ in the television series Heartbeat). The coast is easily accessible, 45 minutes away, and the popular seaside resorts of Scarborough and Whitby are delights not to be missed. The quaint cobbled streets of Robin Hood’s Bay, once a favourite haunt with smugglers, will keep children and adults entertained for hours with its shoreline full of strange and colourful pebbles. Castle Howard is within easy driving distance, and Flamingo Land (a popular theme park and zoo) is well worth the visit. The market town of Helmsley is 6 miles distant and has shops and inns as well as pretty walled gardens. Many NT properties can be found within a 15 mile radius, including Nunnington Hall, Byland Abbey and Duncomb Park, to name but a few. The ancient city of York is but a 45-minute drive (27 miles) and are within a 5-minute drive to the Yorkshire Moors. Excellent walking can be found from the doorstep. The cottages combine country living, yet is close enough to the coast to keep any visitor happy, whatever type of holiday they may be looking for. It is the perfect place in which to relax and unwind - whatever time of year. Shop, pub and restaurant 1.5 miles.

Wifi only works occasionally and only one key for large parties - poor when it costs over £1000 per week to rent. Cottage well equipped and comfortable. Okay for six, would struggle with eight. Swimming pool very useful.

We found the accommodation at the West Wing to be very comfortable. The house is very well-appointed and is a quiet and peaceful place to stay. We were travelling with a small child and a disabled adult and we enjoyed having the horses and other animals in the courtyard for them to visit. We also made good use of the pool and sauna on site. We agree with other reviews that have said the pool is a little cold - perfect temperature if you want to swim for exercise, but a bit chilly if you are just in the pool for fun. Overall we were left very disappointed with our holiday, however; we chose the West Wing because it is located on an organic farm, and the information about the property says that "guests are welcome to participate in farming activities when available or to simply appreciate the workings of an organic farm and wildlife conservation". We were looking forward to finding out more about what they do at the farm and having a look around, but we found this was not the case. No mention of the farm was made when we arrived at the property and when, on our third day, we tried to find the farm and see what was happening there, it was made very clear that we were not welcome. One of the members of staff was reprimanded in front of us for taking us to see the polytunnel. We were left confused and disappointed that what had been offered to us was so clearly not actually available. If you are not looking for this aspect of a holiday, this is a lovely place to stay, well located and very comfortable, but if you are interested in staying on a farm, this is not the place for you. Lastly, as a clarification for future potential guests, whilst dogs are welcome at the property, you cannot leave your pet at the property even for short periods of time. This did not cause us significant problems, as we also had a small child with us, but it may be an issue if you had plans to go out for dinner, or out of an evening.
