Description

Quebec Barn is full of history from Neolithic occupation to WWII, and there’s even a restored 14th century dovecote in the grounds!

In the delightful Friston Forest village of Westdean, these carefully converted Grade II listed barns with exposed beams date back to 1597 and are double award winning (award for excellent conversion of a 16th-century listed ox barn). Now a Christmas tree and apple juice farm it was once owned by Alfred the Great. Free archaeology and history tour available for guests. Recent excavations revealed that the site had Neolithic occupation circa 2700BC, and an Elizabethan terrace and Jacobean banqueting house, the centre of a wider holding mentioned in the Domesday Book, which stretched from the River Cuckmere to Jevington. There are also ruins of an Elizabethan manor house, restored 14th-century dovecote and ox farmyard of the 18th and 19th century. Quebec Barn (ref 26956) was used as local headquarters by Canadian forces in WW ll. Walking plus cycle trails nearby (hire centre, 1/2 mile), Seven Sisters Country Park, 1 mile, and a secluded beach 1½ miles. Cycle through the woods to the lighthouse, or down the lanes and breath the fresh air whilst spotting birds such as buzzards and egrets. In the evening why not cycle to the cosy pub nearby before retiring to your barn in the woods. Enjoy wildlife in the South Downs National Park. Horse riding stables, 5 miles at the old smuggling village of Alfriston. Visit Brighton and the historical ’Lanes’, Eastbourne and stroll along the Victorian pier, Drusillas Zoo, Beachy Head and Glyndebourne (opera in the grounds during the summer) within 5 miles. Pevensey Castle, Battle and 1066 country within 10 miles. Shops 4 miles, pubs 11/2 miles. Properties (refs 19748, 19749 and 26956) can be booked together for larger parties.

3 steps from road to entrance. 7 steps to living/dining room with double sofa bed (for alternative sleeping) and wooden floor. Kitchen. 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 twin. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet. Sloping ceilings throughout.

Lovely barn conversion in an idyllic spot, lots of countryside and coastal walks. Internally the barn is well laid out and comfortable.

My sister and I booked Quebec Barn for the week to visit family in Eastbourne. It was a lovely retreat in the beautiful setting of West Dean in the Seven Sisters national park. It truly felt like a restful holiday even though I was recovering from abdominal surgery and our Gran was in hospital. The barn is perfectly kitted out and lovely and warm with underfloor heating! The blinds in the bedrooms were blackout keeping the rooms dark allowing well needed lie ins. The sofas were very comfortable contrary to other reviews. There was no phone signal (Vodafone) but the wifi worked very well, we were even able to watch Netflix without any issues. Julian was very helpful and friendly and even left us a wonderful homemade lemon drizzle cake, tea/coffee and fresh milk! The parking space has been levelled out and covered with gravel making parking very easy. We are hoping to return next year!

Fantastic location, but disappointed that it was first floor only, and with no patio, garden or even balcony- with a dog this was challenging.
