Derbyshire Cottages

The Derbyshire Regional Specialist - Fantastic properties in the most favourable locations. No one knows Derbyshire better!

A unique studio property with stunning views from the elevated balcony.

This rural retreat for two is down a quiet country lane and offers an architect - designed barn conversion with stunning views from the balcony onto the quaint town of Wirksworth in the Ecclesbourne Valley. A cosy studio , this conversion has a wood burning stove and under floor heating. Twenty minutes walk takes you into Wirksworth for shops, restaurants and take aways. Five minutes walk up the hill offers a friendly local pub serving home cooked food.
The Croft is a 300 year old former cow house and barn, now saved from collapse by the previous owner and renewed as a comfy holiday home. The property is on two floors; downstairs a dining kitchen and well appointed shower room, and upstairs a living area with a wood burning stove and double futon bed/ sofa. Perhaps its most interesting feature is the galvanised steel quadrant- shaped balcony, where guests can sit and have an alfresco drink whilst watching the sun go down, sitting at the bistro style table and chairs. The Croft is situated along a peaceful country cul de sac. It has its own private parking space and is totally separate from the owner’s house which is nearby. There is a wonderful variety of wildlife here, especially birds. At dusk tawny owls are often seen, and sometimes foxes and badgers too.

Ground Floor: Property has under floor heating and a portable oil filled radiator and comprises:
Kitchen/Diner: With table and chairs, electric halogen rings, combination microwave oven and fridge with ice box.
Shower Room: With WC, wash basin, shower and shaver point.
Spiral wooden staircase leads to.....

First Floor: Studio Lounge/Bedroom Area: With futon/sofa bed, flat screen TV, DVD, wood burning stove, free view and radio/CD player

All fuel, power, bed linen and towels included. First basket of logs and sticks included, further available from owner at £5 per bag. Parking bay for 1 car. Use of balcony with table two chairs and barbecue.

Had a great time at the croft, futon/bed was uncomfortable, would benefit from sprung sofa bed

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thanks for leaving your feedback ...... glad you had a good time at the Croft but sorry you found the bed not to your liking. There have been only positive comments on the comfort score since your visit, so maybe our futon bed was just not for you. Beds are a very personal taste and maybe the firmer futon style is not what you are used to. I should point out that it is in fact the thickest and most comfy futon I personally have ever tried.

A lovely conversion of an old barn, the space is perfect for a couple, kitchen and bathroom downstairs, spiral staircase leads to living/sleeping space with log burner and small balcony. On the whole we enjoyed the space and we loved the location. However, it feels like it's in need of some TLC. As noted by previous guests, we didn't find it in pristine condition. From outside, the entrance door and windows appeared unloved and dusty. The bathroom had patches of mildew around the shower and the window was dusty with many cobwebs. The extractor fan in the bathroom wasn't working properly, we gave the filter a quick clean to remove layers of fluff and dust and hey presto it worked like a charm. The terrace is quite overgrown with ivy and the planters empty and sad. None of these are big problems, the place just needs some love.

Loved it! So quiet and cosy, and pub just a five minute walk away - Wirksworth lovely too, just a 20-minute stroll. We will be back.

small but cosy and adequate for 2 adults and a dog. enjoyed sitting on the balcony and the quiet location. the only thing we missed was a cooker. ideal area for the dog as there was very little traffic.

Lovely hideaway. ..we'll equipped. .Wished the trees could have a trim then the views from the balcony would be great .. still would go back in winter to use the log burner. The wine..chocolate. .butter and bread were a lovely welcome gift .

The property is in a quite lane below the owners property, It has a little balcony with no real view other than the lane, And you have to make up the bed each night as it doubles up as a sofa. We found the property to be tidy and fairly clean just got the impression it hadn't been used for a few weeks. There was also nice welcome basket. The owner mysteriously appeared from the garden to say hello and apologies for the cleaner not being able to fully clean the property( fair enough as it was ok).

Had a lovely stay, some fantastic scenery and great walks. Nice little welcome pack and killer log burner. Shame it rained almost our entire stay.

Very charming and well equipped for its size with good 'green' credentials and in a beautiful location with several good walks from the door plus maps and guide books etc. We absolutely loved Wirksworth as it had everything you needed and was delightfully quirky with some good local restaurants. We visited for last minute, short break quite early in the season and though the work surfaces and important areas were clean there was a lot of dust on the windowsills and blinds and a number of cobwebs which I hope get removed before the busy summer period. The futon sofa bed was comfortable enough but rather stained and we were rather surprised that no mattress cover was provided as it was most definitely needed. We struggled to get any real heat out of the log burner and had to resort to the oil filled radiator one evening. Given the quality of the architecture I am sure the owners could have found a better quality table (a round one would have worked well) and a couple of more upright wooden dining chairs. It would also have been useful to have a shallow frying pan available for omelettes/pancakes etc rather than just a saute pan.
