Description

Renovated from a 300-year old cow shed and barn, this unique studio-style property has a wood burner and stunning views from the elevated balcony.

This rural retreat for two is down a quiet country lane and offers an architect - designed barn conversion with stunning views from the balcony onto the quaint town of Wirksworth in the Ecclesbourne Valley. A cosy studio , this conversion has a wood burning stove and under floor heating. Twenty minutes walk takes you into Wirksworth for shops, restaurants and take aways. Five minutes walk up the hill offers a friendly local pub serving home cooked food.
The Croft is a 300 year old former cow house and barn, now saved from collapse by the previous owner and renewed as a comfy holiday home. The property is on two floors; downstairs a dining kitchen and well appointed shower room, and upstairs a living area with a wood burning stove and double futon bed/ sofa. Perhaps its most interesting feature is the galvanised steel quadrant- shaped balcony, where guests can sit and have an alfresco drink whilst watching the sun go down, sitting at the bistro style table and chairs. The Croft is situated along a peaceful country cul de sac. It has its own private parking space and is totally separate from the owner’s house which is nearby. There is a wonderful variety of wildlife here, especially birds. At dusk tawny owls are often seen, and sometimes foxes and badgers too.

Ground Floor: Kitchen/Diner: With table and chairs, electric halogen rings, combination microwave oven and fridge with ice box.
Shower Room: With WC, wash basin, shower and shaver point.
Spiral wooden staircase leads to.....

First Floor: Studio Lounge/Bedroom Area: With futon/sofa bed, flat screen TV, DVD, wood burning stove, free view and radio/CD player

Under floor heating and a portable oil filled radiator, electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi included. Initial logs and sticks included, remainder at £5 per basket. Parking bay for 1 car. Use of balcony with table two chairs and barbecue.

The Croft is a lovely cosy and unusual holiday cottage. It is quaint. The owners have made this a fantastic place, and it is also a fantastic opportunity for people looking to stay in a quirky place that also has everything you need. The setting couldn't be better. Beautiful countryside, lots of walks and near to the lovely town of Wirksworth. Can recommend it as well worth staying there.

The holiday home was lovely and had everything you could possibly need. Situated in a beautiful spot, ideal for walking from the doorstep. Stunning views, gorgeous setting. The only problem for us was the uncomfortable bed. Obviously different beds suit different people, unfortunately the sofa bed was too hard for us so we could not get a good nights sleep. If it is was not for this we would (without doubt) return as everything else was perfect.

Response on behalf of the owner. So glad you found the Croft so lovely, and thanks for the great score, how sad the bed let us down. I am researching a replacement, so hope you will check back in with us next time you're thinking of coming over this way, and we'll do our best to make you comfortable. As you say, beds are very much a personal taste and we are confident that we could very happily make use of the bed ourselves when we replace it, but clearly it didn't float your boat, for which we apologise. Please don't be put off, try us again.

Excellent location for courses at The National Stone Centre and the High Peak Trail for walking. Tiny but well laid out. Futon was tricky at first especially as my husband had a bad shoulder but we got the measure of it. Stairs steep, OK for us but not for some!! especially during night on way to bathroom!! Torch was provided.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner. Glad you found the location so ideal for your purposes. There is indeed so much to see and do within a short distance. Thanks for the good score and for mentioning the torch. I'm glad we got your left article safely back to you. I am in the process of researching a replacement sofa bed, but it is proving quite a task to get anything better than what is already there, we will be using the old one ourselves at the house when we do find the new one. Regarding the stairs, there's no way round that I'm afraid. Would guests use a gazunder I wonder, as in the old days. Possibly not.

We've travelled up and down the A6 and the Via Gellia on numerous occasions and the plan was to find somewhere to stay that got beyond the roads. This ticked all the boxes. Had various days out, Chatsworth House, Bakewell and Matlock Bath. The rest of the time we went out walking, enjoying a refreshing glass of wine, on our return, on the balcony.

Great location and very quiet for a relaxing break. Eco friendly products much appreciated. Only negatives are the spiral staircase (wouldn't be ideal for those of limited mobility) the sofa bed (a bit of pain to put up and down, and I stubbed my toe on it twice!) and it's very light at night due to all the windows. But the balcony more than makes up for it, especially if it's warm enough to sit out.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner: Glad you were able to give the Croft such a high score, thanks. Sorry about your toe, hope it is ok now. Non-slip stair treads are about to be installed on the staircase and yes I'm afraid the nature of spiral staircases is that a little extra care is needed in the foot-sureness department, but we actually had one guest recovering from a stroke who chose to be here because it gave her the extra exercise she needed to regain her mobility.

Great little place, well looked after and like a Tardis it is so well designed, we spent a week and immediately booked another. The area is beautiful with more walks than you could do in a lifetime. Loads of National Trust and English Heritage properties nearby. Don’t be put off by the apparent small size of this property. This place has everything you need. The balcony has lovely views across the valley, loads of birds flitting around and is the perfect place to wind down after a long day walking before strolling to the pub (possibly the friendliest we have ever been in). The microwave doubles as a conventional oven and we cooked most nights with no problem. The sofa bed is comfortable and if you don’t bother to put it back to a sofa each day is fine to lay back and watch TV.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; What a great review, thanks for your appreciation. Love the Tardis reference.
