English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Set in award winning gardens this spacious holiday property is just a few minutes walk to the cobbled square in the centre of Richmond.

A splendid holiday property set in magnificent gardens; first-prize holder in the Daily Mail 1995 National Gardens Competition, and featured in several publications including Homes and Gardens, The Sunday Times, The English Garden and Homes & Antiques as well as television’s Out and About series. Situated just off the cobbled square in Richmond and with countryside views, it possesses tremendous character, style and space. The restored Coach House is separately set within the shared gardens of the owner’s home, which are open to the general public between April 1st - October 31st. The ancient town of Richmond, at the gateway to Swaledale, has an unfinished 11th-century castle and an excellent market place. The town is a hive of activity, offering a theatre, shops, inns, restaurants and a host of other town amenities. A riverside footpath leads gently to Easby Abbey, with some parts still remaining. Other historic and religious sites in the area include Bolton Castle, Jervaulx Abbey and Coverham Abbey. Within driving distance are Scotch Corner and Catterick (once the home to a Roman camp), and Kiplin Hall is well worth a visit. Ripon is home to Fountains Abbey, Britain’s largest and most beautiful monastic ruin which has the added bonus of being the focal point of Studley Royal, an 18th-century landscaped garden complete with lake, temples, water garden and deer park. The scenic splendour of the Dales is easily accessible, providing good walking, cycling and riding terrain.
A little further afield are the bustling Tyne towns of Newcastle and Durham, both excellent for their great shops, markets, restaurants and bars. Durham is also famous for its majestic 12th-century cathedral, medieval castle and university – the third oldest in England. Below the castle and cathedral are the wooded banks of the River Wear, where riverside walks can be enjoyed, passing a succession of elegant bridges with fine vantage points over the town. Shops 200 yards.

Set separately within the grounds, this charming property has five en-suite bedrooms and a spacious first floor sitting-room to take advantage of lovely views. Ground floor: Dining hall. Country kitchen. Cloakroom and toilet. Double bedroom with en-suite bathroom and toilet. First floor: Double bedroom with en-suite shower room and toilet. Two twin bedrooms, each with en-suite bathroom and toilet. Second floor: Beamed sitting-room with gas ‘living-flame’ fire and views to the castle and the river. French doors to upper level garden. Twin bedroom with en-suite bathroom and toilet.

Beautiful house set in the heart of Richmond. 2 min walk to the market place. The house had everything and more...was so well equipped. Very clean throughout. It was a very cold weekend when we were there so put heating onto constant and it was lovely and warm. We were 4 couples so each had a lovely bedroom with en-suite, plus a spare (huffy) bedroom too which wasn’t required! Would recommend anyone to stay here. We had a fantastic weekend. Definitely stay there again!

10 of us stayed here for 4 days for my husband's birthday and we were very impressed with everything . The bedrooms all with bathroom were good . In the kitchen there was enough of everything to cook with and plates also more then enough glassware. The sitting area at the top of the house has lovely views over the valley down to the river also the garden is interesting.Richmond is a great place to walk round ,also it's lovely day by the river and the old station has been converted to an interesting place to look around .

The Coach House is very well situated close to the town and good walks. It is good for large groups, with flexible accommodation and very comfortable beds, good parking and a lovely courtyard. However the house is very "tired" and needs some TLC and a bit of "love". The decor is shabby, the carpets need a good clean, as do the windows. It's a shame because the property is lovely and could be outstanding.

The cottage smelt very damp, we thought at first that was because the carpets had been cleaned and not fully dried out on arrival but as the weekend went on and particularly in the ground floor bedroom, the musty, damp smell remained all the time. The equipment in the kitchen was poor (e.g. no serving dishes and 2 cracked drinking glasses found on arrival). The cleanliness was very poor - we washed all crockery before use, an empty beer bottle was found in one bedside cabinet, tablets (pills) and disposable ear plugs found under 2 beds, numerous cobwebs in bedrooms and under chairs in dining area. The location is great being near the town for shops/museums/market and near the river and recreation area for kids and in a beautiful area. The accommodation is spacious and could be a great cottage once the damp has been sorted, proper cleaning and equipping.

Had a lovely weekend at the coach house with work friends. Between the ten of us it cost less than staying at a premier Inn and is infinitely nicer! Surroundings were gorgeous had a lovely walk around gardens and around Richmond. I can only speak for my bed but it was soo comfy, better than my own at home. Would recommend to friends and family.

Great location very good accommodation for 10 adults gardens worth a visit excellent. Large accommodation so cleaning over a turn around time must be tight. Did think gas as an extra should be included in price of accommodation. I sure if he put an extra 20 pounds on the rental no one would question and vary according to season. Will definitely book again and recommended to friend's
