The Calf Pens is a lovely cozy, well equiped and clean place to stay. Great for those who have mobility difficulties, though not if in a wheelchair. The only drawback is that there is no internet access. We had all 4 of the major mobile phone and internet services between us and nothing worked inside the cottage and only sporadically outside. Having wifi access would make this cottage just perfect. Having said that, I would still stay there again.

Overall, we found the cottages comfortable, as in our previous visit. We very much enjoyed our experience, as with our previous visit two years ago. There were one or two issues, mainly concerned with disabled access (I use a rollator), which I may raise separately with the owner.

Lovely quiet spot with access to great walks, wild life. Very nicely furnished, very comfy beds. We often stay here. Some kitchen equipment getting a bit far seen into now and water pressure in ensuite awful this year. We'd still go back!

This property could be exceptional, but our stay proved to be below average, the lounge and kitchen had not been cleaned, the dining room table and chairs were filthy, there was a grease lined foil paper still in the grill, rubbish bins had not been emptied, fridge needed a good clean, kitchen worktops not cleaned. The Calf Pens is like two different properties, the bedrooms and bathrooms were excellent and clean, the lounge, dining area and kitchen were the opposite. These areas need a good makeover, lounge furniture, rugs etc need replacing. Most of the main lounge furniture very dated, threadbare and stained. Stange that there is no wardrobe in bedroom one, this is in the hallway, not enough hangers for the clothes, kitchen not as well equipped as many properties we have stayed in. Vacuum cleaner could not be used as it was completed full and jammed.

    Response from: Administrator

Response on behalf of the Owner; Again, I cannot apologise enough for the state of the Calf Pens when you arrived. As I explained to you when I came to introduce myself, we had a new cleaner and due to my work schedule I was unable to check the standards before you arrived. We were so embarrassed and I wish you had said that you were still unhappy with the accommodation even after I apologised and had offered to clean and make amends. Thank you for your comments with regards to the décor of the sitting / dining room and we’ve taken them on board. I do think that to say the furniture is threadbare was inaccurate. To say that the furnishings were dated, I think it is a matter of differences in taste. We do have some antique furniture which may not appeal to everyone. We have, however, made some changes to improve the room. We aren’t quite sure about the hanging problem you mentioned. We have hooks on the back of the door in bedroom 1 (as a wardrobe would overwhelm the room we feel) and a closet in bedroom 2 and a wardrobe in the entrance hall – both with lots of hangers. Thank you for the lovely comments you wrote in our Guest Book and we do hope we will see you again.
