The Byre is a romantic two-storey detached barn conversion at High Lowscales Farm, a traditional Cumbrian hill farm situated in the south-western Lakes, between the beautiful countryside of the Whicham and Duddon Valleys. The Farm is set in 17 acres and has spectacular views down to the Irish Sea and the Duddon Estuary. Public footpaths cross the farmland, and next door lies Millom Park, perfect for woodland walks. The driveway is also a bridleway, ideal for mountain biking in the Whicham Valley and up the 600m high Black Combe. The beaches at Haverigg and Silecroft and the Hodbarrow RSPB reserve are a 10-minute drive, whilst the market town of Broughton-in-Furness is 15 minutes away. Within a half hour drive you will also find Coniston Water, the Barrow-in-Furness Peninsula (pretty drives, South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Furness Abbey, The Dock Museum, Walney Island Nature Reserve, Piel Island, Furness Owls, Gleaston Watermill and the Cumbrian Coastal Way), Muncaster Castle and ’La’al Ratty’ miniature steam railway at Ravenglass, which all make for wonderful family days out. The Aquarium of the Lakes and steam boat cruises on Windermere are a 40-minute drive away. You can also enjoy your very own ’cupid’ spa hot tub, complete with massage jets and feature lighting. In order to make guests’ stays as relaxing as possible, shopping, ‘drop off suppers’ and massage and beauty treatments (at the cottage) can be pre-ordered (separate charges apply).     This cottage was simply amazing! I cannot fault it. Wonderfully comfortable bed, excellent facilities, beautiful location and views and the hot tub just completed how perfect everything was, making Valentine's Day extra special! With lots of walks close by and Haverigg beach less than 2 miles away there was plenty to do on the doorstep and we had the most unprecedented sunshine we could only have wished for in February! People often say "we'll be back" and I've always thought it seems a shame to keep going back to the same place when there are so many new places to experience. However, this is the first time I've ever left a holiday let and genuinely looked forward to coming back to the same place again - it really was fabulous!!

    We had a wonderful time at The Byre. The cottage is in a private and peaceful setting and in a great location within an easy drive of the coast and the hills of the national park. There are also some lovely little walks to be had from the Byre itself. The cottage is very well decked-out, it had everything we needed for a week away and is extremely comfortable. The hot-tub was a wonderful bonus too - lovely to chill out and relax after a long day of walking.

    The Byre is a converted farm building for two people which has been beautifully converted. There is a large lounge area downstairs with a kitchen a dining area attached. A huge full length window gives a great view over the farm to the hills and coast. Upstairs is a good sized bedroom with four poster bed and a Smart TV on the wall. Across from this room is the bathroom with large modern bath and an excellent power shower. French windows lead onto a decked area on which is the hot tub. This is a wonderful addition and it was so relaxing to spend time in this with the stars overhead. The property is situated up a hill along a farm track and is some distance from the main road. This is a great advantage as it is very quiet and peaceful. As it is quite a way up the hill there are fabulous views over the town of Millom to the coast. If you walk a short distance up the farm track you come to the top of a rise with more wonderful views to the mountains. My wife and I stayed here in January and the mountains were covered in snow and looked amazing. The Byre has all the comforts you need and there was a welcome pack with various food items on our arrival. The small town of Millom is a mile away and there is a small supermarket, petrol station and various shops catering for all your everyday needs. Along side the farm is Millom Park which is a large area of woodland with paths and walks. You can get access into the park via a stile a short way down the farm track and we did a circular walk of a about three miles which brought back to the farm from the opposite direction. The walking is not strenuous and there is also Millom Rock Park in the centre which is situated overlooking a huge quarry. There are rocks displays with information about the geology of the area. There are other farm building which have either been converted or in the process of being converted and these cater for different sized groups. The main farmhouse caters for 11 and is situated a few yards from the Byre. When we stayed none of the other buildings were occupied so it was wonderfully quiet and secluded. I would definitely recommend the Byre to anyone looking for a quiet place to stay and with good access to the Western Lakes and coast for some great walking.

    Overall a lovely cottage, high end fixtures and fittings, let down with the basics, ( no mirror near a socket for drying hair, pot lids didnt fit, no toast rack,no space to put away our groceries) lovely hot tub, best bed I have ever slept on. At the time of our rental there were work going on right across from our cottage so spoiled our peace and tranquility.

    We had what can only be described as, ' A week of splendour.' The Lakes, The Views & The Hot Tub'. The location of the Byre was perfect as it far from other buildings and we had sheep as neighbours which meant that our stay was very peaceful. We stayed there for 7 days and were able to visit a few places in The Lakes, namely; Stickle Tarn, Keswick, The Lakes Distillery, Bassenthwaite Lake and Coniston Water. We still had ample time to have some quiet days in. I took my SLR onto the public footbath which is on the farm's acres of land and was amazed to see views which are literally 'in the back yard.' The facilities of The Byre are done to a high standard, cooking facilities, SMART TV which had, freeview as well as Netflix! As well as another TV upstairs along with a Bose speaker. The bathroom was also done to a high finish and must say was very spacious. The hot tub was amazing, and being far from other buildings meant that we had privacy. We have been to The Lakes before and where we stayed was nice, albeit far from civilization and meant a long drive just to replenish stock (drinks or the weekend paper). The Byre was perfect as there was a TESCO which was less than 10 mins drive as well as a BP Shell garage to check tyre pressure and refuel for the journey back. If you are the designated driver, this is good to know. Giles came to assist with a couple of things and it wasn't too much trouble for him and must say was very hospitable. The Byre is definitely a place where we shall be returning, be it for a weekend break or another long week away. DID I mention that we had glorious sunshine whilst we were there, we didn't book that however it was a welcomed bonus!
