In the heart of the Lake District National Park


Woodend is situated off the beaten track in an accessible but remote location high on Birker Fell. Set within a relatively quiet, unspoilt area of the Lake District National Park, 7 miles from the main coast road, local village shops and the nearest pub are 4 miles, smaller market towns are 8 miles and larger towns are 15 miles away. It is a short drive to the more populated areas of Windermere and Coniston. These unique, self-contained holiday properties (refs 26869 and 27804) are full of character and charm with fantastic views of Scafell Pike, Bow Fell and Crinkle Craggs. They are set within, though not part of, a working farm, and are therefore surrounded by farm animals. The School House (ref 26869) faces due south up the fell and offers detached ’studio accommodation’ and a spacious, south-facing conservatory/garden room (with an additional multi-fuel stove) and a private enclosed garden area. The Buttery (ref 27804) adjoins the barn and is completely self-contained with its own entrance and an enclosed private garden area. Woodend Cottages are just a short walk from Devoke Water and are situated 3 miles from both the Eskdale Valley and the Duddon Valley, conveniently located for Ulpha, Eskdale, Boot, Seathwaite and Broughton-in-Furness. Shop 4 miles, pub and restaurant 31/2 miles.

Ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen with beams and slate floor. Lower ground floor: 1 double bedroom with en-suite bathroom with slipper bath, shower attachment and toilet.

Patio. Enclosed patio garden with sitting-out area and furniture. Fire basket.

Both properties: Multi-fuel burner in living room (coal included, logs at cost). Economy 7 central heating, gas, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Travel cot on request. HD satellite TV (full package). DVD. Gas cooker. Use of washing machine and tumble dryer available. Fridge/freezer. Wi-fi. Natural grounds. Gas barbecue. Parking (1 car).     A lovely place to stay but extremely small, apart from the bedroom and bathroom which were fine. Owners on site and very helpful without being intrusive. Home grown pork was a bonus as was the bread. Really too small in the lounge/kitchen area, especially when raining outside, and nowhere really to put wet things or boots. A decent porch would have made a big difference.

In our welcome folder we do make the point that “if you intend to leave feedback we do just ask that you consider were you fully aware of the facilities, indicated in the descriptions, available for each property at the time of your booking”. Our website does give full details about the floor area and dimensions of the living accommodation in The Buttery and we do advise people to read and take this into account when booking. We have actually considered adding a porch and this is something we may do in the future.
