English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Description

Located close to the centre of Cowes, this holiday property is ideally located for discovering the wonders of the Isle of Wight.

This beautifully appointed holiday cottage, right on the waterfront looking out across to West Cowes and the Solent, combines the heritage of the coastguard’s traditional cottages with modern architectural design, offering bright and airy high vaulted ceilings with modern comforts. The property is 20 yards from a public slipway, so if guests had a small boat, this could be stored at the property and launched via the slipway straight out into the Solent. The Boat House accommodation is one of a pair, all on the ground floor and there are lovely walks along the esplanade just outside the property. There is a park nearby with children’s play area. Island attractions include The Needles, with chair lift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse and coloured sands of Alum Bay. Blackgang Chine, the oldest themed attraction in the UK is nearby, and other attractions include Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Isle of Wight Pearl, Dinosaur Isle, a donkey sanctuary and Calbourne Water Mill, which has a 17th-century working watermill. Osborne House and Gardens (Queen Victoria’s holiday residence), Carisbrooke Castle and the sailing town of Yarmouth are worthy of a visit. Cowes in the north west of the island is renowned for its sailing. Also within easy reach are vineyards and quaint villages, some with thatched roofs such as Godshill, Old Shanklin and Brighstone. Outdoor pursuits include scenic walking, riding, fishing, cycling, water sports and golf. The island can be explored from the open-top buses that stop regularly at various collection points. Beach 400 yards. Shop 200 yards, pub and restaurant 300 yards.

Large beamed open-plan living room with vaulted ceilings/kitchen with dining area, tiled floor and two sets of French doors leading out onto the lawned garden with waterside views. Double bedroom with 5ft bed and en-suite bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Twin bedroom. Shower room with double shower cubicle and toilet.

A perfect home for us on our Island holiday. A character property, beautifully renovated and dog friendly too! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily return . I appreciated the plentiful information leaflets and the selection of books . An excellent choice!

Second visit. Lovely cosy cottage. Has been converted beautifully. Very friendly, helpful owners. If somewhere is very good in winter months then bound to be better in summer. Right by waterfront.

Second time staying here, fabulous house, everything you need is there. Ticked all the boxes for a family with a child with additional needs.

Our visit was not a conventional holiday. Accommodation was our main priority. We are intending to attempt a further booking later this year but cannot establish a date. We will be disappointed if, once we are in a position to make plans, The Boathouse is not available. Unfortunately, for us, we know from looking at the Guest's Comments that it is quite probable that we will be.

Lovely cottage, would have been ideal for us, but currently there isn't the off-road parking that is advertised. If they made a larger driveway with a dropped kerb we'd stay there again next time.

I found that the online information was somewhat misleading. It looked like the cottage overlooked the sea which was not the case unless you went to the bottom of the garden. It stated that there was parking for one car, which was very important to me as I am disabled. The off street parking was very narrow and impossible to negotiate especially as the kerb has not been dropped so you had to bump the car up the kerb. Even with the plank of wood to bolster the kerb it was still far to difficult to manoeuvre the car in to the narrow parking space. There was nothing to stop a car from parking in the street behind you which would block you exit. The road outside was very narrow and crowded with children on bikes and playing football I was constantly worried that my car would be scratched. The oven was filthy as was the microwave, washing machine powder draw and I had to descale the kettle before I could use it. The windows had not been cleaned for some time. All in all a very disappointing stay and not one I would wish to repeat. all in all it was like living in a derelict ghetto....which is why we left on the Tuesday! not what we expected from a 4* rental! the photo does not represent the actual cottage site at all.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner- We try our best to provide a good basis for everyone to enjoy their stay here on the Island. We are very sorry that this guest did not have a satisfactory experience when staying in our cottage. Her criticisms are noted and we will endeavour to put things right as soon as possible. Our cleaner has deeply apologised for the alleged dirty items. The matter of on-site car parking has always been a problem due to very adverse cambers on Albany Road but on-road parking is free all day subject to availability. A meeting with Island Roads, the highway authority, since this guest was here, has achieved an agreement to partially reconstruct the pavement outside the Boathouse to improve the gradient, and the provision of special markings on the road itself to deter other road users from blocking the parking space. This work will be carried out during the coming winter months. We trust that all would-be guests will take into consideration as wide a range of reviews as possible.
