The cottage was in a great location and in good condition. As a base of exploration it is perfectly acceptable. However as a home from home IT failed in 2 counts; the ovens controls have worn away making it unusable and the sofa is either very soft or the body is failing meaning you sit only a few inches from the floor.

We enjoyed a great week in this delightful and quirky cottage, set among other interesting buildings, and hope to return soon. Among the places we visited were Richmond and Middenham castles, Redmire (via the super Wensleydale Railway in Bedale). And we had some longish walks directly from the cottage - our particular favourite was across the fields to Newton-le-Willows. The local pub in the village - The Old Bay Horse - we found very welcoming, with excellent meals on offer. Bedale boasts various excellent shops and also offers very interesting strolls, particularly near the harbour.

The cottage is in a good location for access to National Parks, activities and attractions. However, I don't think I would classify it any better than three star. It's let down by a number of things which is a shame such as: - On arrival finding the bins for all the holiday cottages in the group on our driveway. - No welcome pack, not even a couple of tea bags after a long drive to get there. - Lack of information pack and instructions for appliances. - In the case of the cooker all the settings are rubbed off so using it is guesswork! - The wet room is very small and unsuited for larger people. - Using the wet room results in the whole space getting wet including cabinet, sink and toilet. - There was some mould in the wet room where it does not dry out properly. - No washing up liquid or dishwasher tablets which made us question the cleanliness of the crockery and cutlery. - Only one small saucepan to cook with. - Uncomfortable seating, particularly the settee which is very low.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your comments. The Blacksmith’s drive is a very ample space to the front of it. The area where the bins are situated is in fact at the access to the workshop and garden. We stopped offering basic tea / coffee / biscuits welcome packs some years ago as nobody used them. Most people who stay in holiday cottages bring some basic supplies with them. Some organise a supermarket delivery on arrival day! Very few people are tempted by sachets of instant coffee and plastic pots of chemical milk substitute. As I do not live near the cottage, I am unable to provide anything more exciting. The relevant brochures for the appliances are to be found in the bottom slim drawer in the kitchen. The oven has been scrubbed too hard by over-zealous cleaners and I agree that it is probably best suited to making casseroles and simple dishes rather than soufflés or sponge cakes, which admittedly would require more precision. The visitors’ book contains all the basic local information required, including details of doctors, restaurants, shops, etc. The wet-room is small and described as such on-line and it is by its nature, wet! The Blacksmith’s Shop is a studio with mezzanine bedroom, which should indicate that it isn’t huge. We do have larger cottages if required though, naturally, they cost a little more to rent. We try to ensure an on-going stock of both washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets and I replenish them whenever possible. There are several pans, including a small 3 tier stainless steel steamer pan. The Ikea sofa has served well; particularly as all the covers are washable. I find it comfortable but must accept that others may prefer a higher seat, especially if they are a little immobile or arthritic. I will look into an alternative but given the size of the Blacksmith’s conservatory any replacement seating will be relatively small.
