Description

Blackdown Hills an AONB, between Honiton and Chard, offer great walks and with Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, and Exeter all easily accessible.

Both detached holiday barn conversions are decorated and furnished to a good standard andhave their own gardens and fabulous views across the countryside. Situated in the grounds of the owner’s Grade II listed, medieval farmhouse, they are in an excellent location from which to explore numerous National Trust houses, great walks and the cathedral city of Exeter. Also within easy driving distance is the famous World Heritage Coast, as well as the seaside resorts of Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, Beer, Branscombe and Exmouth. Situated between both Dartmoor and Exmoor National parks, both with brilliant walks, heather clad tors, ponies, rugged terrain and quaint villages. Within six miles there are local family run shops and Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen. After reading a negative review about the property we were concerned but our fears soon vanished. The cottage was in a beautiful, relaxing setting and was light and airy yet warm and comfortable, clean and well equipped. The only negative was the 2 mile single track leading to the property - my worst nightmare! A stress to be endured and dreaded twice a day! As this was not mentioned in the write up on the website it was an unwelcomed surprise and is the only reason we would not consider returning to The Shippon.

Perfect accommodation in a beautiful setting. Yes it is remote but it is so typical of rural Devon. We loved its spaciousness, the quiet and the very thoughtful range of equipment etc. We loved it and thoroughly enjoyed our peaceful stay. Some of the walks and paths in the area are very overgrown but then it was midsummer - and anyway, that is not the fault of the accommodation!! Full marks all round!

We have stayed at The Shippon twice before in 2012 & 2010 (which is why we were so disappointed) Unfortunately since then the accommodation has deteriorated - I don't think it's been updated since 2010 the bedding was old and tatty - towels threadbare - cleanliness not what is expected only been cleaned where you can see (which is not acceptable) The track down to the farm has always been narrow and bumpy - but this year unacceptably so - overgrown - hedge rubbing against car either side and the pot holes (worse than potholes) were of concern to the underside of our car - not the relaxing break we were expecting - also woken at 4.20am by alarm going off every 20 minutes until approx 10.00am - they did apologise but it didn't help - I had to buy a pillow.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; The Blackdown Hills are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the network of small lanes are part of the landscape. It is the county council which is responsible for the maintenance of lanes and the hedgerows, however the grasses and wild flowers that sometimes overhang the lanes, particularly after rain are soft are part of the natural beauty of the area and are unlikely to damage vehicles. The incident with the alarm was extremely unfortunate. The system which had only recently been serviced developed an electrical fault. However we were unable to turn it off as is normal and had to wait until the engineer disabled the system. We have now been given a means of doing it ourselves in the unlikely event that that the system should ever breakdown again. We did offer the guests our profuse apologies. The anti slip bathmat had been rolled up by a previous guest with a tear which we failed to spot, but was immediately replaced. We are very sorry that they were disappointed. We take cleanliness and standards very seriously and our many guests before and since have told us how much they appreciated the cottage.

A lovely place to stay in beautiful surroundings. The only drawback was distance from amenities such as pubs and places to eat. However we would go back agains

A lovely cottage in a beautiful and peaceful location. Wonderfully equipped and tastefully decorated. Helpful hosts in Jane and Stuart. Fresh milk and eggs on arrival were appreciated.

Our 2nd stay at the Shippon. We booked in for 4 nights over Easter as we know it's a lovely quiet retreat to come back to over a bank holiday. It's a lovely cottage with lovely views over the fields and the valley. It's got a great fire and a very generous amount of logs is left and the wood burner was even laid for our arrival which was great after a nightmare journey on the M5.It's very well equipped for a cottage if you like to cook.Jayne the owner and her son Stuart are really nice and very helpful but never obtrusive which we like.Fresh eggs and milk are left in the fridge for your arrival which was nice. Will definitely return!

This is a fabulous cottage and one of the nicest ones we've stayed in.It was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. We loved the lovely bright open plan layout with great views over the gardens. The fire was great and a huge basket of logs was left for us and the fire was already laid for us on arrival which was a nice touch. The cottage is situated up the lanes but we didn't find this a problem and it was convenient to reach Branscombe,Beer and Lyme Regis. Some people might find an issue with access from the parking as this is over uneven cobbles.Tricky with walking trainers on so no high heels! Also Wifi would be nice but the cottage is so nice,we didn't miss it all.Would definitely return!

This is by far the BEST holiday cottage we have ever stayed in and we have stayed in MANY. The location, the tranquility, the proximity to shops, the style of the property and most of all the VIEWS are absolutely to die for. We will definitely be coming back here again and again. There is no WIFI but that was a blessing in disguise and if we can survive a week with no internet considering we both run online businesses, anyone can. Please book this cottage - you won't be disappointed!
