Description

Small families will delight in the leisure activities on offer and the proximity to beaches whilst staying at this cosy cottage.

On-site facilities including swimming pool

These beautiful cottages have been tastefully renovated from a traditional Welsh barn and are set in the heart of Pembrokeshire alongside the Llys-y-Fran Country Park and reservoir. There are plenty of facilities available for guests free of charge, including croquet and badminton, a heated covered swimming pool, all-weather tennis court and a children’s play garden. You can also enjoy the country park which is less than a minute’s walk and has a 200-acre reservoir and an impressive 100ft dam, the largest game fishing in west Wales. This is a beautiful woodland setting with a delightful nature trail for both walkers and cyclists, and an 8-mile perimeter trail providing fine views and a variety of wildlife including badgers, foxes and otters. The broadleaf woodland provides a breeding site for sparrowhawk, buzzard and woodpecker, whilst the lake attracts uncommon water bird species such as little gull and black tern. Set in the heart of Pembrokeshire, giving access to beaches, national park, the historic Preseli Mountains and the worlds famous Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Coastal Path. Within a short drive is Oakwood Theme Park. A holiday in Pembrokeshire would not be complete without a visit to the picturesque harbour and the golden beaches at Tenby or the busy resort of Saundersfoot, a complete contrast from the more secluded parts perhaps, but always popular with children. Also within a short drive are Manor House Wildlife Park, Caldey Island, with its cistercian monastery and countless historic castles such as Carew, and Pembroke. It is an ideal location for a perfect family holiday as a getaway or for trying some of the outdoor pursuits and entertainment. Pembrokeshire is famous for its excellent restaurants and pubs. In the immediate vicinity there is the country park restaurant and two pubs serving food in the village of Clarbeston Road (3 miles). Golf and horse riding are within 5 miles.

We landed on a week when the weather was very wet and the owners were getting over an illness. The cottage was quaint and attractive but not what we are used to. We only saw the male owner who was very friendly and helpful, allowing our bikes to be stored in his shed. His friendliness made it difficult to complain. First impression of the cottage was good but if you don't like spiders then don't stay here. Apart from the clear evidence of 'fly-swatting' around the walls and ceilings, there were cobwebs everywhere, including in the cupboards and wardrobes. We did not unpack because of this. We spent the first two days brushing them away and killing spiders (sorry!). The open plan living room/kitchen was sufficient but the TV is small with freeview sky only and this didn't always work. The bedrooms were small with small wardrobes/drawers which we couldn't use due to the spider issue. The bathroom is small and very poorly lit. On day 3 we happened to look behind our bed headboards and to our disgust, saw a mass of dust and cobwebs which hadn't been cleaned for a long, long time. This was probably because of the weight of the bed and it never having been pulled out. The kids beds were no better (though we didn't tell them). Behind the radiators was the same story. This discovery led to sleepless nights and a move to the downstairs settee for sleep! We didn't clear behind the beds through fear of disturbing more spiders. This cottage also suffers from excessive damp (not helped by all the rain). We cut our visit short and would not consider returning.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We have read these comments and take them on board. The guests in the cottage seemed happy enough and left on the Thursday instead of the Friday. We had very bad illnesses in the family that week and felt it necessary to distance ourselves from all 40 plus visitors to our properties. Usually we are very hands on and even though they are self catering properties we always say in our welcome and introduction that if there is anything that they are not happy with or if there is something that doesn't work or they are unable to work come to us and we deal with it........ It has been our same business attitude for 15 years. A new cleaner was assigned this cottage for the summer and the cobweb issue has always been our major concern when cleaning. Obviously a mistake has been made by the cleaner in cleaning behind the beds and our checking thereof. The evidence of "fly swatting" around the walls only occurs in October in the two south facing centrally heated cottages when the flying insects (mosquitoes?) come in to the warm...... some guests ask for fly spray some do not. Some love the spiders, some are horrified when they discover that we hoover them up. It upset my wife and myself to discover that it was a big issue for these guests, and if they had pointed this out I would have cleared up every spider and cobweb and wiped down the "fly swatted" walls. The weather was particularly bad in the run up to the half term week and also during it being exposed to the end of several hurricanes and again this south facing cottage bore the brunt of high winds and rains which forced its way into the walls above the front door. Even though it is now dry because we have had a dry spell, I would assume it was damp for their week. We also had poor internet and poor TV reception too. I wouldn't call the damp excessive. The weather was so bad I had to shut the swimming pool for the day.... I am horrified and upset to think that they were forced to not use cupboards and drawers and especially forced to sleep downstairs. They should have asked/complained or at the very least spoke to me about it and it would have been dealt with. If we weren't here these would all be valid points. The fact that we were on site in some capacity makes me feel somewhat upset that they let it spoil their holiday.

Rather remote but near Country Park amenities. Modern interior well equipped. Property needs some maintenance even though it was start of main holiday season. Pool not in working order (advised of this after booking)

We had a great time staying at Swallow Cottage. Couple of points:- 1. No bin bags 2. Couple of light bulbs had blown - before we arrived 3. No where to plug the lamp in in the twin bedroom so very dark if someone has to get up in the night
