English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Stable cottage is in a area perfect for walks including a hidden little gem, Challacombe Reservoir.

Located on the vast Woolhanger Estate, these three highly individual, detached holiday properties (refs HTTH, HTTJ and HTTK) have been converted from old farm buildings to provide very comfortable, well-appointed accommodation. They offer a quiet haven but with plenty to do on the doorstep. There is great walking on the many footpaths in the area, including up to Challacombe Reservoir, a hidden little gem. The working farm estate has a wonderful wedding venue location in its spectacular Victorian music room and the cottages can be used in conjunction with Woolhanger Farmhouse to provide accommodation for guests. As well as walking on Exmoor, there is plenty to do within easy reach of the cottages. In Ilfracombe there are the Tunnel Beaches, harbour and numerous shops and restaurants, Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, Watermouth Castle and at Lynton, the funicular railway runs to Lynmouth, or take a trip on the narrow gauge railway at Woody Bay. At Croyde and Woolacombe are some of the best surfing beaches in the country as well as many small coves and bays. There are NT properties at Arlington and Knightshayes and RHS gardens at Rosemoor, Great Torrington. Shop and pub 500 yards.

Three steps to entrance. Living/dining room with wood-burning stove, patio doors, wooden floor and well-equipped kitchen with wooden floor. First floor: Bathroom with separate shower cubicle and toilet. First floor: Two double bedrooms, one with 5ft bed and one with 6ft zip and link beds (can be twin beds on request).

Second time staying at this location. Love the peace and quiet of its location - but walking distance to the local shop and great pub (serves great food too). The cottage had everything required for our family for a very comfortable stay - including a huge gas BBQ in the private garden. Will be back for a third visit.

Comfortable cottage and beautiful area. No Wi-Fi or phone reception-we don't mind being 'off the grid' but info pack was old and with no phone reception at all we felt isolated and unable to plan our days. Local shop and pub were lovely!

We had originally booked The Old Dairy Barn on the Woolhanger Estate, but were disappointed when the holiday was cancelled due to a burst water pipe in the property. However we were offered The Stable Cottage just a few yards away from The Old Dairy Barn. We were delighted with this cottage, it was very well equipped and spotlessly clean. We would return to both properties again and would recommend to family and friends. The Old Dairy Barn had two bathrooms which we liked having previously stayed there, but The Stable Cottage had just one bathroom. The enclosed garden was great for the dog.

Great location, peaceful with wonderful dark skies and wildlife such as barn owls, hedgehog, skylarks and bats. Accommodation would be perfect if some minor issues were addressed such as replacing worn equipment like tv & DVD player, leaking kettle and frying pan. Installing more comfortable sofas would be of benefit and ensuring the property is sparkling clean is a must. An information pack needs to be available to include easy operational instructions for the house equipment. Definitely needs to be a phone line installed for emergencies, if not WiFi too. The potholes on the lane leading to the property are horrendous. All that said, nothing that a thorough review by the management couldn’t sort easily and we did enjoy our holiday there.

Great cottage to relax and enjoy the countryside, whilst being able to get to the stunning beaches and coastal resorts in around half an hour.

Lovely cottage, can't wait to book a return stay. Wood burner had plenty of logs, just what was needed when snowing outside. Welcome pack containing local produce was a very nice touch. Can't recommend enough.

Stable Cottage is lovely! Very well equipped, clean, and the welcome package excellent.Location is convenient to all the places we wanted to visit on the coast and the moor. We thoroughly recommend the Red Deer Safari. If there is one thing to improve, it would be the sofas, they need to be bigger and more comfortable- much needed after a day walking. Other then that, no hesitation in giving Stable cottage thumbs up!

The cottage was the first time we had stayed in one and have to say it was great, on arrival we where greeted with a selection of nice goodies in the fridge and a very nice cake and bottle of wine on the table. We could have not had any more rain but it did not stop a nice stay each day we followed the sunny weather and found it by using the local forecast. We eat in four different pubs, with the Black Venus in the village we did go three times good food and beers, however we found the Pye Arms which was very good. Our dog Simba had a great time walking over the hills behind the cottage walks book from the very good PO. In village ten min walk very helpful owners. The cottage was cosy and very well equipped we could have just stayed in and cooked but did not. If weather had been sunny there is a great BBQ in garden you can use. For the winter a great log burner. The cottage was spotlessly clean. It is in an ideal location to explore the coast from Bude right up to minehead and Dunster back down to Tiverton. Would go again.
