Description

Stable cottage is in a area perfect for walks including a hidden little gem, Challacombe Reservoir.

Located on the vast Woolhanger Estate, these three highly individual, detached holiday properties (refs HTTH, HTTJ and HTTK) have been converted from old farm buildings to provide very comfortable, well-appointed accommodation. They offer a quiet haven but with plenty to do on the doorstep. There is great walking on the many footpaths in the area, including up to Challacombe Reservoir, a hidden little gem. The working farm estate has a wonderful wedding venue location in its spectacular Victorian music room and the cottages can be used in conjunction with Woolhanger Farmhouse to provide accommodation for guests. As well as walking on Exmoor, there is plenty to do within easy reach of the cottages. In Ilfracombe there are the Tunnel Beaches, harbour and numerous shops and restaurants, Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, Watermouth Castle and at Lynton, the funicular railway runs to Lynmouth, or take a trip on the narrow gauge railway at Woody Bay. At Croyde and Woolacombe are some of the best surfing beaches in the country as well as many small coves and bays. There are NT properties at Arlington and Knightshayes and RHS gardens at Rosemoor, Great Torrington. Shop and pub 500 yards.

Three steps to entrance. Living/dining room with wood-burning stove, patio doors, wooden floor and well-equipped kitchen with wooden floor. First floor: Bathroom with separate shower cubicle and toilet. First floor: Two double bedrooms, one with 5ft bed and one with 6ft zip and link beds.

Pros: enjoyed our stay at Stable Cottage and the welcome pack was much appreciated. The accommodation is very well thought out with open plan kitchen/diner plus living area and two good sized bedrooms upstairs. The cottage provided a very good base to explore North Devon and visiting Dartington Crystal and Atlantic Village is recommended. Cons: the local water pressure is low so a pump is used to increase pressure and this is situated in the loft above the second bedroom and is very noisy in operation. I found it very difficult to sleep because of the pump powering up during the night for no apparent reason, this was remedied by giving me access to the isolater in the locked bedroom cupboard. We missed wi-fi as there is no mobile signal. One or two kitchen items needed replacing ie, frying pan and pot ovenware. Overall a good experience but some attention to detail is required to justify a 10/10 rating relative to cost

Only negatives are: 1) The lack of enough hot water, even for two people, so don't know how you would get on with four. 2) Signage around the farm to say it's private land, thus the feeling they don't want you walking the dog down the lane. So felt a bit trapped in the cottage and small garden. Cottage too small to suit 4 adults, but the two of us had a lovely time and would return.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your feedback. There is a 24 hour hot water switch in the twin bedroom, accessible to our guests at all times. The Private Land sign had been put in place by an unauthorized person and has now been removed. We welcome all our guests to walk and enjoy the countryside. We are really pleased that despite this, you had a lovely time at Stable Cottage and hope to welcome you back again soon!

An excellent cottage with all you need and more. On arrival the cottage was very clean and tidy, even though its a dog friendly cottage there was no signs or smells that they had been in there. There was a lovely welcome pack with wine, cakes, eggs, bread etc. It is in a very nice location with walks around the farm and down the lane which come across streams and woods etc. It is a nice location for access to Lynton/Lymouth, Ilfracombe, Combe Martin and Woolacombe. The cottage was very well equipped to a high standard, a very nice kitchen and excellent bathroom with very good powerful shower, comfy beds in the rooms and all the cooking/cleaning equipment you require

Beautifully appointed as you expect from a Gold Award property. We arrived after the horrific weather the previous weekend. The TV signal was down and the owner very quickly resolved the issue for us late on the arrival evening (we couldn't miss the Rugby!). High quality accommodation and the neighbours are lovely too (permanent residents).

Very well kept cottage with an amazing welcome pack. Nice touch. Every last bit of equipment supplied, the only reason for the 9/10 is the back door is a pain to close and needs some attention. We were that impressed with the cottage that we will be back to stay in the future. Keep the good work up.

A comfortable well equipped cottage and in a good location to see parts of both Devon and Somerset. The cottage is quite remote in a very small village but with a good shop and pub. Lots of lovely country walks on the doorstep and not too far from fabulous beaches too. Ideal for a dog and children as it has an enclosed garden. When we booked the cottage it was advertised as having wifi but we were informed prior to our stay there wasn't any. Whilst it was nice to be away from emails etc we felt quite isolated by the end of the week as we had no phone signal either (Vodafone) so nobody could reach us at all. The welcome pack was lovely, the best welcome pack I have received, a very nice touch. Loved the log burner, very cosy.

Loved the cottage, loved the area. Perfect for the dog too. Probably the best Welcome Pack we've ever had in a cottage. The local pub was lovely & within walking distance, but a little pricey to go every day. Other than the one pub, it was quite a trek in the car to find other places to eat out or buy takeaway food from - just a little niggle in an otherwise perfect break. We would highly recommend this cottage.
