A lovely, coastal, holiday cottage set in the far west of the Lake District National Park, perfect for explorers.

Springholm is a lovely, quirky, terraced holiday cottage situated in the beautiful village of Bootle, on the west coast of the Lake District National Park. Built in 1757, Springholm has been used as a home and carpenter’s workshop before being re-converted in 1991. Bootle is one of the oldest and smallest market towns in Britain, with a population of about 700. The market charter was granted in 1348 by King Edward III. Springholm looks out onto the fells and there is easy access to Bootle Fell, Corney Fell, Birker Fell and Black Combe. The stunning high fells around Wasdale - including Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England - are just 15 miles away. Roman ruins and light railway at Ravenglass estuary are 8 miles away, Muncaster Castle and World Owl Sanctuary, 7 miles. Eskmeals beach is 1 mile, other good beaches at Haverigg and Silecroft. Shop 100 yards, café/restaurant 500 yards, pub 3 miles.

There is nothing good I can say about this cottage. When we got there, it was far away from everywhere, had no character and hardly a soul around. We had to travel an hour or so each day to get to the awesome areas of the Lake District, such as Keswick and Windermere, the best attraction that was nearby was Muncaster castle, and the beach was a bit of a lifesaver as there wasn't much else that was free to do with kids. As two families with 4 kids and our grandmother, we asked for a cottage that was family friendly... this was far from that. The attic room was spacious, but had a dangerous narrow wooden flight of stairs. The whole downstairs floor smelt of kerosene from the huge tank out the back, there was no outside space at all for the kids to play in, and the front door stepped right out onto a dangerous road with trucks hurtling past. Our seven year old almost stepped right into one. For the amount of money we paid, this was a depressing, musty hole.. There was no fire exit. The lid to the kitchen bin was broken and wouldn't close, there was no washing machine (and the day we trekked out to the launderette 20 mins away, it was closed that day, even though the cottage guidebook said it was open 7 days). The dogs out the back were barking constantly. There was only one bathroom between 9 of us. The sheets were musty and had obviously been on a long time and had just been sprayed with Fabreze or something as there was a chemical smell. The whole place was a huge disappointment for us and for my mother who was visiting from New Zealand and celebrating her 72nd birthday there. We felt misguided by the agents who had assured us that it would be a worthy replacement, and who we feel took advantage of someone who was from another country and didn't know the area. For this reason we will never EVER again visit this cottage.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your feedback which we really value in aiming to give our guests the best holiday experience. I’m sorry you feel misguided and taken advantage of by the agents. It sounds like you wanted somewhere near Keswick or Windermere, rather than the West side of the beautiful Lake District National Park in which Springholm is located with its beautiful beaches and quieter, unspoiled fells. Springholm was consistently rated between 8/10 and 10/10 by reviewers between Sept. 2016 and March 2017, and is exactly the same cottage in the same location with the same caretaker as you experienced, but obviously different people want different things! Because the road is narrow to the front (like many in the Lake District – Springholm was built in 1757 long before cars!) we clearly recommend in the visitor’s book that you use the side door for coming in and out which is well away from the traffic. The front door is also a fire exit. All the amenities are as described on the website. If there were more than one bathroom the house would be 4* not 3* and would cost much more to rent. The sheets are freshly laundered each time. I am grateful for the information about the bin which we can replace. There should be no kerosene smell so we will check that. Occasionally there can be a slight smell for a short while after a delivery but we will certainly check that all is well for future visitors. We can also revise the visitor’s book in the light of your comments – the launderette is now open every day apart from Wednesday. Thank you for letting us know. I’m glad you found the beaches but sorry you didn’t find the playpark in the village or the beautiful Ravenglass light railway which is great for a family day out with kids, as well as the World Owl Sanctuary at Muncaster Castle and other local attractions. I hope your mother enjoyed the rest of her trip over to the UK.
