Description

Smugglers Haunt is superbly situated close to the beach; perfect for those looking for an active holiday with water-skiing and fishing nearby.

"Sands flanked by rock, with wooded cliffs above – true Devon coastal character . . ."

The wooded cliffs at Bolt Tail form a backdrop to this sandy cove on what is renowned as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South Hams. These holiday cottages are set within 100 yards of the safe sandy beach – an unrivalled position for enjoying the seaside, but also perfect for fishing, sailing and water-skiing (with a dinghy-launching slip 200 yards away, and facilities for larger boats at nearby Salcombe). The cottages are in the centre of this charming seaside village, with its pretty thatched cottages, inns, restaurants and small shop within a short walk. The South Devon Coastal Footpath winds along the cliffs and through Hope Cove between Salcombe and Thurlestone, with opportunities for magnificent walking amongst glorious coastal scenery.
The maritime attractions continue slightly further afield. Salcombe, 4 miles away, is one of the most prestigious sailing centres in the country. It offers extensive sandy beaches, too, and a wide choice of fascinating shops, boutiques and restaurants in its quaintly winding narrow streets. The estuary here is a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured craft of all kinds at their moorings – a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. Thurlestone, 2 miles to the west, can be reached either by car or via the coastal path. It boasts yet more expanses of golden sands, a regular feature of this lovely coastline. But, in addition, it has a superb cliff-top links golf course, edged by sandy coves, tennis courts and picturesque streets of thatched cottages overlooking the bay. Kingsbridge, the ‘capital’ of the South Hams, has a good choice of interesting shops, a museum and a sports centre with squash, badminton and bowling. Boating and diving trips can be arranged in the Salcombe Estuary, and boats are available for hire. Within easy driving distance are the historic cities of Plymouth and Exeter and Kitley Caves. The wide open spaces and breathtaking scenery of the Dartmoor National Park are less than an hour by car, and there are many National Trust properties, stately homes and interesting gardens within a short drive. Anchor Cottages are set in a little terrace in the village. They have been designed to offer ‘upside-down’ accommodation, with first floor living rooms. Comfortably furnished, each has a small first floor sitting-out area with furniture. They are ideally located for a Devon holiday by the sea. Shop/P.O. 50 yards.

There are three bedrooms on the ground floor; one double, one twin and one small single. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Open-tread stairs to first floor: Spacious open-plan living/dining room with quality double sofa-bed (for +2), elec fire, dining table and compact fitted kitchen area. French doors give access to patio.

Smugglers is in a great location but it is ill equiped and we found it to be in dire need of a thorough refurbishment.

Firstly the Apartment: Smugglers Haunt is a comfortable, spacious and well positioned unit with ample kitchen equipment and seating. The apartment was clean and beds comfortable. The unit is showing the signs of wear and tear of a coastal property and could do with some basic maintenance. Some windows wouldn't open due to corrosion and the toilet seat was loose when we arrived although didn't take long to remove and replace correctly. There was a crack in one of the bedroom windows. Thoughts to improve the holiday experience at a fairly expensive rental apartment: When paying this much for a week in the Summer why is it necessary to have to go through the process of reading electricity meters on arrival and departure and then calculating the cost (at inflated unit rates) only to find the the whole exercise resulted in having to leave a cheque for less than £10? Bath towels were very small and the shower mat stained and in need of replacement. A non slip mat inside the shower/bath would improve safety. The installation of some inexpensive pull down blackout blinds on the bedroom windows would greatly improve sleep during the summer months. Hope cove has zero signal for mobile phones and obviously therefore no mobile data connection either. The area does, however, now have highspeed fibre broadband available and these cottages should have routers installed for use by renters. Today, this is a requirement not an extra. On Hope Cove Location: We were generally disappointed with Hope Cove as a holiday location compared with other locations. The beaches were poor, stoney, dirty and the water uninviting. The Cove restaurant was friendly and had a small but acceptably priced menu for this type of holiday captive audience. Sadly it has very limited seating and can be difficult to get into or even order take out from - 50 minute for food from order, even take out. The much larger pub, the Hope & Anchor, has many more tables and dining areas spread over a large indoor area as well as outdoor tables. The menu, while more extensive, is priced at the ridiculous level and the food quality is very unimpressive. They also have very long waiting times, on a Friday at 7pm we were told: 90minutes for a table and a further 45 minutes after ordering. Overall Conclusions: Smugglers Haunt could be transformed into an excellent apartment, with just a little more attention to detail, and would be ideal for Hope Cove holiday makers. For ourselves, (we have owned holiday properties in Florida and South Africa), in future we will confine our rentals to the European resorts as they offer a better holiday environment (beaches, restaurants, etc.) and are MUCH better value for money.

Matresses could do with replacing especially on the sofa bed. Otherwise great.
