Quaint farmhouse cottage with plenty of character and decorated to suit the style of cottage and its surroundings. Old low beams and rooms on varying levels adds distinct personality and ambiance. Has added modern facilities such as hot tub and pool table to attract varying customer needs so they have thought of everything. Just learn to keep ducking under the low beams if you are over 6 ft tall - slight issue in the shower - but there are two baths as an alternative so you cant complain about that. It all adds to the cosiness. We (party of 7 of mixed ages inc children) all had a wonderful stay and would definitely return and have recommended it already to other friends and family. Victoria was a lovely host and very informative on the local area.

A cosy property with lots of character that leaves you constantly trying to work out how it must have looked 100 years ago - so many levels and doorways. The cottage is well heated throughout and even getting out of the hot tub on a chilly autumnal evening was bearable as it is under cover. The warmth is also reciprocated in the welcome. The village of Dunham-on-the-Hill is quiet with some nice eating places within easy reach - the Dunham Arms is within walking distance and is good if you like Chinese/Thai but you can also get good meals at The Hornsmill, The Chester Fields and The Shrewsbury Arms a short drive away. The cottage is ideally located for Chester Zoo, the city of Chester and places further afield such as Tatton Park, Jodrell Bank and Liverpool - all less that an hour's drive.

Brilliant stay! 6 of us went for a girls weekend away, great location, wifi works in the living room only, hot tub is great! Three big bedrooms, and one single bedroom. Big enough for us all to fit in, 15-20minute taxi drive into Chester. Will definitely be booking again :) !

We had a fab time at Smithy Farm. We were visiting Chester for a family reunion so the ease of access to the city was important. We were able to have the wider family around on the Sunday which gave us a really good opportunity to just chill and relax together. We were even able to FaceTime with those who were unable to join us. Definitely recommend and Vick our host was most accomodating.

We had a great time away with our 3 grown up children, their partners and grandson. We had stayed here before a couple of years ago so knew what to expect. Smithy Farm met our accommodation needs really well. Having 2 televisions meant that those who didn't want watch cricket and the grand prix could watch something else. The pool table was a big hit, unfortunately it wasn't warm enough to make use of the hot tub. We ate out at lunch time and a couple of evenings, there was adequate cooking utensils, pots and pans to enable us to cook for 7 adults although I did bring a large lidded frying pan from home.

Excellent location and very friendly owner. However, the equipment in this cottage is well below expectations when being charged around £1,000 per week. Television & freezer incredibly dated, as were bathrooms in general. WiFi was pretty much useless, as it appeared to come through stone walls from next door. The essence of this cottage is that it is a quirky converted farmhouse which works very well and it is an incredibly interesting property to stay in. Unfortunately these do not make up for the poor facilities. There is a need to spend a little money to bring the basic standards up to a reasonable level, until then there are many other cottages that will offer this.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are always really appreciative of constructive comments on our property to help us improve the facilities and given the comment in relation to the WiFi we have recently invested in further equipment which should hopefully solve any issues which have been experienced. In respect of the TV’s we would are quite shocked by these comments. The property is equipped with a flat screen LED TV (42 inch) as standard (as advertised) and further to discussions with guests a lot had indicated that a second TV would be a really helpful benefit to them (particularly those with young families). In the circumstances a second TV was provided (which, it is accepted, is an older model albeit a very good quality one with a good picture). We have had nothing but good comments in relation to this addition and therefore will not be removing the second, older TV. Regarding the freezer, this again was added to the property as an extra facility on top of the fridge (with freezer) already situated. We are unsure what comments to make in relation to the freezer, it is a white chest freezer which is clean and works! Several guests had indicated that a chest freezer would be of use and therefore these comments were taken on board and the same provided. Given that, save for this comment, we have had nothing but positive reactions to the same, we will again be keeping the same within the property. Finally in response to the comment that we “need to spend a little money to bring up the basic standards up to a reasonable level” we are really unsure where to begin. Having read the entirety of this comment we do feel that perhaps the guests themselves were not quite suited to the property. This is an 18th century farmhouse which has been built upon and extended throughout its long history. It has been lovingly restored and updated with modern facilities where appropriate and in keeping with the history of the property. Whilst we do take on board all comments and give consideration to the same we do think that perhaps these guests were looking for a new build property with a hint of character rather than the historical listed building which this is. We would add that whilst we are of course disappointed that these guests were not pleased with their stay, we have had very few negative comments upon the property and have many guests who return to us yearly.
