Description

This wonderful ‘chocolate-box’ thatched cottage is filled with traditional features creating a warm and welcoming environment.

This wonderful ‘chocolate-box’ thatched cottage dates from 1660 and is set quietly in CPRE’s Best Kept Village in Wiltshire 2008 (small village category), a short stroll from a 13th-century church of
St Laurence. Adjoining the owners’ property, it is traditionally decorated and styled with beams and traditional features which create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A few miles away is Bowood House with 2000-acre gardens and children’s playground. NT places nearby include Avebury Stone Circle and Avebury Manor (subject of The Manor Reborn), and Lacock (used in the Harry Potter films and award-winning TV series Cranford). Not far from the stunning Marlborough Downs. Bath, Salisbury, Longleat, the beautiful Cotswolds and village of Castle Combe (used as a location for the film War Horse) are less than an hour’s drive. There are excellent regular bus services nearby. Shop 3 miles, pub (with wi-fi) 300 yards.

Living/dining room. Modern kitchen. Bathroom, over-bath shower, toilet. Narrow steep stairs to first floor: Double and twin bedrooms with low sloping ceiling, low doorway. Beamed throughout.

Quaint little cottage in a pretty village with friendly owners and a really good pub with good quality food at the end of the road. A good base to explore the area.

The cottage was everything you would hope from a quintessential thatched cottage. Yes, it is small, and perhaps a bit of a squeeze for a family of 4 adults – mainly in the lounge – but the title of the cottage rather gives you a clue in the first place, so we knew what to expect, and it in no way detracted from a most enjoyable week. We have never met such a lovely, welcoming and helpful couple as Val and Geoff. Geoff even happily showed us around the lovely historic church, even breaking off from entertaining guests to do so, that was much appreciated by us. A lovely, quiet situation, ideal for exploring the north half of Wiltshire. We would not hesitate to stay again ourselves and would recommend the cottage and the owners to friends wanting to visit the area.

Small Cottage was very comfortable .the kitchen and bathroom coped well with 4 adults and the bedrooms were cosy .The garden was small but pretty .One day we had left some washing on the line and it rained but the owners had popped it on a airer under a sheltered porch for us ,which we felt was above standard for looking after guests. They were really friendly when we saw them but we had complete privacy .The homely touches lots of extra pillows and cushions and bumpers on beams (no sore heads )were very welcome . A charming thatch cottage in a lovely village.

Wonderful holiday for our family of four. Small Cottage is totally charming. We were made to feel very welcome by the owners and all the locals. Lacock and Castle Combe are a must for your visit.
