We were not really impressed with this cottage. There were numerous faults with the accommodation some of which were not rectified by the owners. The second bedroom was not actually a bedroom. The stairs to this went up from the living room to a balcony where the bed was. There was little privacy for the person occupying the area. We arrived on the Friday to be told the washing machine was broken and it was not repaired until the Tuesday. The owners did offer to wash our clothes for us on the Saturday but we declined as we thought the washing machine would be fixed by the Monday. After the machine was repaired we spent hours trying to dry our clothes in the drier part of the machine which did not work. When we told the owner about this we discovered that she had known the drier did not work but had omitted to tell us. We eventually had to dry our washing over radiators. The toilet literally took 30-45 minutes to refill after it was flushed. The couch and chairs in the living room were not very comfortable. On the plus side the street was quiet and parking was not a problem. The garden was lovely and the kitchen was well stocked with equipment. In summary, we felt the cottage was okay but could be improved.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I am very sorry that you didn’t enjoy your stay with us. Unfortunately the residents the previous week had forced the door of the washing machine open thus breaking the hinge of the door so that the washing machine couldn’t be used. I was not told about this until the Friday morning as they were leaving and immediately phoned an engineer who came and took the serial number later in the day. You did seem to be impatient to do some washing having only just arrived for your holiday and I offered to put a load in my machine for you on the Saturday. The engineer phoned me on the Monday to say that the washing machine was out of stock but that he would try to find one that would fit. He phoned me again later that day saying that he had found a door and would come on the Tuesday morning to fix it, which seemed to me pretty good service. I apologise for not mentioning that the drier on the same machine wasn’t working but to my knowledge it is not mentioned in the cottage description. The extra bed should not be described as a bedroom as it is in the balcony and I didn’t realise that it was described as an additional room, and should only be used for children or as an additional bed with the knowledge that there is little privacy. I have examined the toilet which is functioning as normal and although rather slow to fill we have never had this complaint before. We have been letting the cottage for over twenty years and if you had looked in the visitor’s book you would have seen that many of our guests regard it as one of the most comfortable and well equipped cottages that they have ever stayed in.

It's a very unique accommodation, and has some delightful features in both the house and garden. However it could all do with updating, some of the crockery was chipped and cracked, and the beds are old and uncomfortable, also we found mouse droppings in a cupboard.

Very warm, comfortable and well equipped and presented cottage. Access to the wonderful garden was a treat, even in January.

Excellent cottage, which was very spacious, comfortable, and has an extremely well equipped kitchen. The garden of the main house is extraordinary. There are frequent buses into Edinburgh about 15 minutes walk away, in Musselburgh.

One week of bliss in Shepherd House Cottage and gardens. Charles and Ann were most generous hosts, very welcoming. Beautiful surroundings, lovely neighbours too.
