Description

Original features and a farmhouse kitchen help define the character of this spacious property which is close to Whitby.

Steeped in history, this imposing, detached holiday cottage dates back to 1888 and was originally the residence of a former sea commander. Many original features are still evident, with a wood-panelled entrance hall, stripped wood flooring and cast-iron fireplaces throughout adding to the charm and character of this beautiful property, which makes the perfect place for a family get-together. Huge comfortable sofas and armchairs adorn each floor, with quiet reading corners looking out over open countryside to the front, and picture windows to the rear affording stunning sea views across the pretty gardens down to Robin Hoods Bay. Fylingthorpe sits at the top of the ancient fishing village of Robin Hoods Bay where visitors step back in time as they follow the row of tumbling fisherman’s cottages and the cobbled streets (lined with curio shops, tea rooms, inns and restaurants) down to the sandy little cove. The historic Port of Whitby - where Captain James Cook set sail from on his epic journey of discovery - is but a 10-minute drive. Here the colourful promenade leads to a 3-mile stretch of award-winning sandy beach. The North York Moors steam train can be boarded to discover some of Yorkshire’s finest scenery as it chugs its way through the beautiful Esk valley into the famous village of Goathland - renowned for its connections with TV’s Heartbeat. A little further south of the village is the elegant seaside town of Scarborough. Golfing, fishing, sea trips, cycle and walking tracks are all available locally. Shops 150 yards, pubs and restaurants 100 yards.

A fantastic stay with all the family. Perfect location plenty room not to be on top of each other. 4 of the 5 bedrooms have lovely views and the 2 landing reading areas were well used to give everyone some space. It was quite pricey but we were stuck to school holidays. Out of school holidays price is more attractive. We were very happy with the house and would stay again. A couple of small things could be done to make the house even better for larger groups. A loo and sink in the cupboard on the top floor and probably one on ground floor would make the property that bit more special. Also because of location kitchen got a little chilly. Everything else is truly perfect and we had a great time in Sheen Cottage. We did not run out of things to do in the area. so many walks from the door. Very happy.

We stayed over new year and had a great time in a very welcoming house. There were lots of home comforts which made us quickly settle in and feel at home. We were a group of 9 and found the accommodation fitted us perfectly. The only MINOR downside we found was the inconsiderate neighbors who use traffic cones to insure they don't have to walk a few yards to their front door a very selfish attitude.

The cottage is lovely, in a great location and plenty of space. However on appearance it is a lovely place with great views of Robin Hood bay, but the cleanliness of the house was a let down with dog hairs all over the place and with a 11 month old baby in the party it was even more noticeable. WIth her crawling about the place it was easy to spot that dog hairs were everywhere and we mean everywhere, had to hoover up downstairs to try and get rid of them. Damp in the dinning room probably from a leak in the bathroom and damp in the top rooms really let down sheen cottage which could have been perfect. Understand pets are allowed but would expect it to be cleaner for the next guests. Smelt of wet dog as well which didn't go away.

Lovely property with super views surrounded by splendid countryside and great walks. Only minor downside was the main street parking although it did not prove to be problem during our stay. Had a very relaxing week long stay.
