Lovely location and beautiful cottage. Very clean and well equipped. The garden was such a great bonus ! Lovely comfortable beds and plenty of storage . Only downside was not having firelighters and more sticks for the woodburner. Surely if H&S is ok with a woodburner then the necessary sticks & matches to accompany it are risk assessed too.

Lovely old cottage in a beautiful quiet location yet not to far from Stratford centre. Lovely welcoming local pub with reasonable prices and quality food. Locals friendly and Anne Hathaways cottage not even a minute away. Thank you for a lovely quiet and peaceful stay in a old but looked after cottage.

It might seem strange that I would visit this cottage again given the average scores I've given it! The location of this cottage is excellent and it's in a peaceful place, so that was great and exactly what was needed. However, the cleanliness of the cottage left a great deal to be desired - the fridge was grubby, I had to wipe down the kitchen walls and there was charred timber in the log burner, so this had not been cleared out since it was last used. The cooking and kitchen equipment was minimal, with chipped mugs, mismatched glasses and cheap cutlery. The sofa in the lounge was very, very uncomfortable with sagging upholstery. The table and stools in the kitchen were really below par, making for very uncomfortable mealtimes. Not everyone can afford to go to the pub for every meal! We looked through the guest comments and time and again the same remarks come up, so whoever owns this cottage simply doesn't take note of a lot of them. Some things are so simple to put right, such as a draught excluder by the front door, which had a howling gale coming through the gap at the bottom throughout our stay. I suspect money has been spent on the heating system, the beds (which were very comfortable) and the bathroom, which are big spends in themselves, while everything else has been somewhat neglected. The charm of this cottage, though, was in its heritage and timelessness. I loved the beams, the thick walls, the windows (although you couldn't open some of these). The cottage had a very peaceful atmosphere and the log burner (once lit) was lovely. The WiFi was really good given I was on a working holiday. So that was appreciated. However, we actually left a night early, which is a great shame. This cottage could be made into a really fabulous place to stay with some improvements to furniture, kitchen equipment and overall cleanliness. In the vain hope that the owner will take note of these comments, I would come again given the unique age and antiquity of the cottage. As a final note, I thought this cottage was expensive given the time of year. You can get superbly finished cottages for a far more reasonable price.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We have been letting Rose Cottage for around ten years and whilst occasionally a guest does not find everything exactly as they expected - usually because they have never previously stayed in a 400 year-old cottage - we can only say that in all this time we have never seen such a litany of random grumbles. There are at a guess around three hundred comments in the visitors' book to which the guest refers and we disagree profoundly that 'time and again the same remarks come up'. They do not. For example, no-one else has ever said there was 'a howling gale' under the door (and it does have a draught excluder), that the kitchen stools were uncomfortable or the fridge was grubby and we are simply at a loss to explain why the guests felt they needed to wipe down the kitchen walls as they have recently been repainted! And we are particularly astonished at the comment:'The cooking and kitchen equipment was minimal' as if there is one consistent remark in our visitors' book it is that the cottage is very well equipped. Moreover, in their complaint about the stools, the guests imply that the cottage kitchen and the local pub were their only dining options. This is simply untrue as there is a dining table in the living room and four antique dining chairs that fit around it - as is shown very clearly in the website photograph. But rather than enter into an item by item rebuttal of these comments, it will perhaps be more helpful for future guests if we quote from the most recent annual grading assessment (although there is consistency from year to year) made by the English Country Cottages inspector: Cleanliness - An excellent standard throughout - 5 star Kitchen - A very well equipped kitchen - 5 star Public areas - Soft furnishings - 5 star

Beautiful cottage. It felt like we were staying in one of the places you pay to visit to see life in Shakespeare's day.
