In superb locations and beautiful settings. Cottages4you gives you a fantastic range of hand-picked properties with quality you can rely on.

Rose Cottage serves as a fantastic exploring base as it is close to both Paignton and Torquay which both have great features.

In a tranquil village setting, 2 miles from the sandy beach at Paignton, these three adjoining single-storey holiday cottages, imaginatively converted from former farm buildings, retain splendid original roof beams and stone walls (references 29076, 29077 and 29078). Adjacent to the owner’s home, around the same pretty courtyard garden with a pond and fountain, they are attractively furnished in ‘New England’ style. The South Hams boasts the mildest climate in Britain. Paignton, 2 miles, and Torquay, 4 miles, has sailing, tennis and sports centre and coloured lights festoon the harbour by night. It has many good sandy beaches, giving it an almost Mediterranean feel. Inland is the medieval town of Totnes, with a castle and 16th-century buildings, and once a week, there is an Elizabethan and farmers’ market. From the quayside, there are boat trips down the River Dart to Dartmouth; the South Devon Railway runs steam trains to Buckfastleigh and along the coast to Kingswear, opposite Dartmouth. Take a ferry across to visit Dartmouth with its array of shops and restaurants, take a walk around the castle and enjoy one of the tea shops for a Devon cream tea. Within easy reach is the spectacular Dartmoor National Park. There are many tourist attractions close by including Agatha Christie’s summer home, Babbacombe’s model village and the award-winning Paignton Zoo. Away from the coast, visit Tavistock, where you can enjoy some dramatic scenery. There are many NT properties and plenty of surfing, swimming, sailing and angling. Torquay has a lot to offer, such as the Living Coasts, where the penguins wander freely, and the theatre which has shows all year round. The Roman city of Exeter is 15 miles, whilst bustling Torbay encompasses Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Visit the yachting marina and a selection of fine gardens, in addition to Kent’s Cavern where the remains of some of Britain’s very earliest inhabitants were found. Discover the castles, abbeys, wildlife parks, steam trains and model railways, all within easy reach with many open throughout the year. Shop 700 yards, pub and restaurant 400 yards.

All on ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen with beams. 2 bedrooms: 1 double (four poster) with French doors and en-suite bathroom with shower over bath and toilet, 1 twin. Shower room with toilet.

Gas included. CD. Gas hob. Electric oven. Barbecue.

The bed had springs sticking out of side of mattress so two people unable to sleep together Could not use shower and bath together as drainage wouldn't allow because of flow back. General condition of property seemed lacking in maintenance ie worn out fixtures and fittings in bathrooms. There were cobwebs in the kitchen area. In summery maybe all this is because the business is up for sale and has been for the last 2 years according to the owner. We have been in some of your advertised property before and have always been satisfied but not this time.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are obviously disappointed with the comments made regarding your stay in Rose Cottage and in particular your reference to our personal circumstances which we feel was a little unfair. We have tried very hard to ensure my wife’s recent illness does not affect the business we run and gone out of our way in making sure it did not impact on your holiday. We were aware the mattress was reaching the end of its life as a previous guest had a gentle word with us about it (unless we are told there is little we can do and a judgment has to be made as to whether one person just doesn’t like a bed or if there is a real problem with it) however I don’t agree with your assertion that the “springs were sticking out of the side” as I have just double checked before it is finally disposed of. It was unfortunate that your holiday was the wrong side of the delivery of the new mattress we had on order but that is just the force of circumstance. Regarding your comment of the property lacking in décor and maintenance, we were inspected by our regional manager back in the summer and she decreed a renewal of our 4 star rating. However properties in this type of business (especially in a barn conversion) do get misused more than a family home but this can’t be rectified until there is a break in the schedule, and we have been fully booked up to last week 8th Oct. Having spoken to our area manager she does not feel there is any need for a re-inspection. With a high quality leather suite, pine dining furniture and fitments as can be seen in the photos, I am sad you find this unacceptable. A broken towel ring is not adequate evidence of poor maintenance and fittings, just someone being heavy handed and this will be rectified now bookings have quietened down. We always take comments seriously and as an example have made improvements in the lighting following an earlier comment. We have a lot of positive feedback in our guestbook which sadly is not always reflected on the Reevoo website however other properties in our campus have received as high as a 10 (twice in Jasmine Cottage 29078) which have an identical specification, so our maintenance and décor cannot be all that bad. Indeed the review prior to yours on Rose Cottage was an 8 and very complimentary.

Looked good but very dark inside, lighting could be better. I could not read my book inside. Four poster bed looked inviting but mattress very uncomfortable, we resorted to sleeping in the single beds. Tv so small, I didn't think they were ever made that small.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. I would like to take a moment to respond. We do describe the cottage on the current web site as “cosy” and there is little we can do to improve natural light short of major structural changes. With regard to lighting, with one main pendant light, two coffee table lights, one uplighter and 4 spots I am a little surprised you found it inadequate. To add much more might make the room look crowded. The bed mattress regrettably is very much a matter of taste and for everyone that dislikes it others find it acceptable as you would have seen from the comments in our guest book which (as much as we would like) we are not allowed to publish. It’s a shame that those very positive comments never reach the internet. It is also only 6 years into the 8 year life that mattresses are recommended to have but we will look at this at the end of the season. Finally the TV is far from the smallest that is available however most of our guests come for a holiday and don’t find TV to be an important part of their stay which is also the reason why we don’t have such services as Sky or similar. This comes from the conversations we have with guests over the past number of years. It must be remembered that we are a cottage and not a hotel and the services we offer are to fit that criteria. We have just undergone our annual inspection (not long after your stay) and were found to be worthy of the 4 star with which we were awarded. I do hope our failings as you perceive them did not stop you from enjoying this lovely part of the country.

The owners were very friendly and the location excellent. The beds were comfortable and clean. I think as we booked very late the place was not quite as clean as it should have been but not a great issue. The main area for improvement is in the equipment supplied. There were no saucepans in the kitchen, we had to use pyrex dishes which is a bit odd. Personally we would have liked a bigger TV. Otherwise we have no real negative comments

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We were so sorry to read your comment posted following your stay at Rose cottage. We have just been into the cottage and found the saucepans in the left hand cupboard under the cooker so it is a mystery why you did not find them. Likewise we did tell you that if there were any issues to come and see us, and we could have alleviated the need to use the Pyrex dishes by providing replacements. All our cottages are fully equipped and there should have been no need for you to have been inconvenienced in this way so we are very sorry for this and hope it did not spoil the enjoyment of your holiday.
