We had a wonderful week at river cottage lovely location, a short drive to the beach and a 5 min walk to the local pub that served good food. Sara and John who lived next door were very helpful and always on hand if we had problem the welcome pack was much appreciated. Lovely family and dog friendly holiday lots of little extras that made our stay enjoyable.

Response on behalf of the owner- Thank you so much for your lovely review Carole. As the new owners of River Cottage, we were delighted to have such a pleasant family as guests during our first full week of ownership and we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. We really hope you will visit again another time.

All in all expected a lot more from a 5 star property. Living space was cramped and you could not comfortably, utilise the kitchen, due to its size for either the preparation or taking of meals. Squeezing into the dining room table was like an assault course. Levels of cleanliness akin to a 3 star property. The bedding was a disgrace with torn and stained duvets, linens of very poor quality. We had a number of issues with the property and addressed some with the property owner however, we got to the stage that we could not be bothered reporting issues. Left the property a day early. Setting is lovely and local village has everything you need.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are extremely disappointed that you didn’t enjoy your stay in our 5* luxury cottage. We pride ourselves on the continued cleanliness and quality that we have provided over the 8 years we have been operating and have only ever had fantastic reviews on Reevoo and Trip Advisor (we are one of the highest rated holiday cottages in our area) with another 5* review the week after you left. We are writing this reply, not as an attack on these comments, but to uphold our excellent reputation. Cleaning and Laundry services are carried out by Yorkshire Cottages after every party has left, as well as monthly inspections to make sure we keep to the highest standards possible. We are sorry these guests didn’t find the cleanliness of bedding to their satisfaction; if they had mentioned the issue to us we would have been more than happy to replace the bedding for them. As for the quality of the bedding, we only use 100% Egyptian cotton, as is required for a 5* rating. The only other problem the guests notified us of during their stay was a blocked toilet, which led to the en-suite becoming flooded and led to the ceiling of the floor below becoming stained. We immediately unblocked the toilet, cleaned the flooded area and then organised a decorator to come and paint the ceiling to make their stay more comfortable, to which they agreed. Unfortunately, when the decorator arrived, he was declined entry to carry out the work - leaving the guests with a stained ceiling for the duration of their stay, which is not what we wanted. Unfortunately these guests did not adhere to the booking terms and conditions; they allowed their dogs in the bedrooms which we state is not permitted (which may be accounted for the dirty bedding?). We found the dogs scratched all the windowsills which we have had to repaint and varnish, they also chewed the metal plug in the wet room leaving it broken. We also discovered the chopping board had been burnt on both sides, the handles had come off the Smeg cooker, the washing machine was broken and the bath had been cracked. All of these issues we have had to resolve at much cost and time to ourselves. Happily, most of our guests have no such reservations as those expressed in this review.

A very well equipped home with a lovely family feel which made our Christmas event all the more special. The owner was right, we didn't need the log burner on much and turned down the heating even though it was freezing outside! The perfect location for our family get together and we wouldn't hesitate to rebook in the future, perhaps for a spring or summer let, to eneable us to see that lovely garden with flowers blooming and to fish in the river.
