Description

A great quality barn conversion at an old silk mill on the western edge of the Peak District.

This superb renovation is part of an old silk mill situated in a lovely rural setting by the river on the western edge of the Peak District. Spacious and stylish, everything is provided to a great specification - from the glass worktops in the kitchen to the underfloor heating and en-suite wet room. Comfortable furnishings and unusual touches of decoration combine to offer a property of real character, with the benefit of a wood burner in the lounge. It has also been carefully designed to be accessible for visitors with limited mobility.

Other buildings at the silk mill have been sympathetically converted in the last ten years and featured in interior design magazines. Michael Portillo visited during the filming of his Great British Railway Journeys where he follows routes up and down the country originally suggested in an edition of George Bradshaw’s guide. The unique ’Silk Gardens’ - seven indoor themed gardens which evoke the silk route from China - can be viewed by arrangement with the owner. Visitors can also enjoy private fishing and the farm animals such as miniature horses, sheep and chickens.

Langley is a quiet village close to Macclesfield, with picturesque rows of mill worker’s cottages surrounded by spectacular countryside. Several small reservoirs, attractive woodland and ancient packhorse routes characterise the area, with good walks in Macclesfield Forest, up the peak of Shuttlingsloe and across to Tegg’s Nose Country Park. This is also a convenient place to stay to explore the attractions of the north west - Jodrell Bank Observatory, the vibrant cities of Manchester, Chester and Liverpool and historic houses such as Gawsworth Hall (with its summer open air theatre), Little Moreton Hall and Styal Mill.

Plus points Great upstairs lounge. Plenty of plates and most of the cutlery. Good sized mugs. Nice and warm. Loads of space to park. Minus points Very few bowls and teaspoons. The downstairs lounge was dark in the evening even with all the lights on. No kitchen roll or dishwasher tablets provided. The upstairs bedroom would be better as a single room, we didn't use it for fear that the person under the sloping ceiling would do themselves an injury if they were to get up in the middle of the night. Suggestions A standard lamp downstairs would be a useful addition. Provide kitchen roll and dishwasher tablets - you could charge an extra £10 a week to cover costs. I think the property is better suited to a smaller party. It was fine for the two of us and we could have managed a third OK - I wouldn't have wanted more

Great holiday cottage. Just found a lack of information for a few things, eg, how to work the heating, how to operate the grill and hob. Also had to ring to ask wi-fi password as no phone signal so needed internet access. Good facilities for elderly relatives.

We stayed here to visit family in Macclesfield, the cottage was our haven of peace! Our little Westie loved watching the chickens in the yard, that was his entertainment and ours was the WIFI and Sky TV. Sara was a pleasure to meet and made you feel very welcome (thanks for the Milk!) unfortunately we did not get chance to say hello to the 'Doc'. Plenty of space, beds very comfy, lovely and warm - did not want to leave. The only thing missing was another mirror, may be a full length one on inside the wardrobe so not to spoil the walls just a suggestion. Do not hesitate to book this cottage you will not be disappointed, look forward to our next visit
