Description

Surrounded by Exmoor countryside, this cottage is a great base for discovering the towns and villages on the South West Coastal Path.

Located down a long drive in a quiet wooded valley, just outside the Exmoor village of Wheddon Cross, Quarme Coombe Cottages offer a real haven away from the world. The quiet and beautiful natural countryside is right on the doorstep of these detached cottages. Hedgehog Cottage (ref: W43378) has a cosy interior and there is a good sized garden at the rear of the cottage garden, as well as a sitting-out area at the front. The cottages are just a short drive away from Wheddon Cross, which has a well-stocked convenience store and pubs. Further afield, there is superb scenery and walking on the south west coastal path, or inland on the moors. The Victorian villages of Lynmouth and Lynton, famous for the Watermeet Gorge (National Trust), valley of the rocks and the funicular cliff railway, are within an hour’s drive. Looking towards Minehead, there is the promenade to enjoy an ice cream whilst walking along, as well as having a good array of shops and other amenities. A visit to the enchanting medieval Dunster Castle (National Trust), with its beautiful terraced gardens, Deer Park and Mill will make for an interesting day out. Watchet, Porlock and Porlock Weir hold plenty of charm and interest to those who visit the area. There are beaches at Dunster and Blue Anchor. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

We had such a lovely stay at Quarme Coombe Cottage. We had the whole cottage to ourselves and the surrounding garden; it was beautiful – we picked some thyme from the garden for the Sunday roast, a bit of mint & even found some alpine strawberries! Great as a base to explore, it felt very private due to the one road approaching it. On the few days it rained, the log-burner was fantastic! The cottage was well-equipped. We found the highchair underneath the bunk beds, the washing-machine & dryer was easy to find & use just down the garden path in one of the outhouses. Ironing board we found in the little warm cupboard behind the telly. Enjoyed seeing the rabbits around the back of the house in the morning's! Charming little getaway.

We had to change our holiday plans at extremely short notice and found this to be an excellent choice. For a group of 6, having only one toilet/bathroom meant we had to queue occasionally. Otherwise, we were delighted with our choice. We did notice an earlier review described the cottage as being rather "doggy," but found this was not the case. There is also an ironing board and iron - the owner is responding to reviews 😊.
