English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Being in an AONB, this property is close to the West High Down, The Tennyson Trail and the Heritage coastline and features a 6-person hot tub, perfect for relaxing at the end of a busy day sightseeing.

Priory Cottage is a period, thatched, stone cottage with an abundance of character and detail, dating from the 19th century and appearing on maps and censuses of the 1830s. Originally owned by Lord Tennyson and featuring in the Tennyson Trail, the cottage adjoins another property and features beautiful decorative tiles above its windows and doors that were made by Lord Tennyson himself when he chose the property to house his beloved nanny. Priory Cottage has other famous connections as Tennyson’s good friend G.F.Watts lived next door, and Montgomery’s map-maker is also known to have lived in the cottage. The property is set in an area with a strong smuggling history, and at the back of the cottage there are drawings of ships scratched into some of the stones – traditionally the sign of a smugglers’ safe house. Being set within an AONB, most of the surrounding land is National Trust and includes the West High Down, The Tennyson Trail and the stunning Heritage coastline. Tennyson monument and Headon Warren with its breathtaking views of The Needles are nearby. Although in a secluded area, amenities in Totland and Freshwater are only a 5-minute drive, offering shops, library, tearooms, indoor swimming pool and pubs, and Alum Bay with its famous coloured sands, is about 30 minutes’ walk over the Downs. The historic sailing town of Yarmouth, set in the estuary of the River Yar, is about 10 minutes’ drive, and Colwell, Totland and the popular sandy beach at Compton are 5 minutes’ drive away. As well as the excellent walks from the house locally, there are also many tourist attractions to discover, including The Needles Park - one of the most popular attractions on the island, with chairlift, boat rides, coloured sands, lighthouse, amusements and glass making. Also within easy driving distance are Blackgang Chine, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, traditional pottery making, Calbourne water mill, various NT homes/gardens, vineyards, museums, wildlife centres, a zoo, pearl centre, Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne House, Cowes/Yarmouth harbours. Outdoor pursuits include golf (nearby Freshwater), cycling, riding, sailing, fishing and diving. Beach 1 mile. Shop 1 mile, pub 500 yards.

We a family of five stayed at Priory Cottage for half term. Very spacious, and well equipped; however needed a good clean, floors, doors and skirting boards especially. Location great for walking on downs, but had to drive a lot to all attractions. Close to built up housing area which we had not expected. Hot tub great though.

Nine of us including a three year old went to stay at Priory Cottage a couple of weeks ago. The house itself was very large and there was plenty of room for us all. There was also a large selection of toys and a trampoline in the garden which made staying with a young one much easier. We would definitely consider staying again.

Cottage was lovely but we contacted owner three times as heating wasn't working in some bedrooms and only came on for a few hours in evening... Owner didn't respond to any of our phone messages

Gorgeous cottage, well equipped with all utensils. Comfortable rooms and towels were provided. The hot tub was wonderful. We were provided with a loaf of bread, milk, chocolates and other extras which was a lovely surprise. Walking distance to the Needles. It was a little tricky to find on the sat nav but I think that is unavoidable in these parts. Many thanks for allowing us to stay.

Owners were most helpful but they should sack their cleaners.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Very disappointed by your reevoo, just wished you had contacted us (we live onsite), if you were disappointed with the cleaning standard, as I would have called the cleaners back. I will be monitoring the cleaning personally from now on.

This cottage was in a beautiful location with well laid out accommodation with lovely gardens and recently added hot tub. Lovely decor in the bedrooms and bathrooms and plenty of books and toys to keep everyone amused. Generous welcome tray on arrival too. A few little niggles included dirty crockery/saucepans in the cupboards, whiff of pets in living room and top mattress on bunk too uncomfortable to sleep on so son slept on settee all week.

The cleaning standard was very poor but it's a cute cottage and a good location.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I was both surprised and disappointed to read your review. We use a professional holiday cleaning company. This is the first complaint we have received about the cleaning. I have passed your remarks on to follow up. We do try are utmost to keep the property at a height standard.

Waitrose with our food delivery had trouble finding the cottage because the official address was inadequate. No street name.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; I am so sorry to hear that Waitrose could not find the property with your delivery using the full postcode and directions provide. We feel we have described the location of the Cottage quite clearly and I do hope this did not detract from you enjoying our Cottage. We always try our best in all areas to ensure that the guests have an enjoyable stay.
