Description

Set in the hamlet of Martin, this detached barn conversion is constructed of a mixture of cob, flint and brick.

Set in the delightful hamlet of Martin, which has a village shop selling fresh produce and provisions, this lovely, detached barn conversion constructed of a mixture of cob, flint and brick, includes features such as oak beams, doors and floors, and a high vaulted ceiling. The owner’s home is adjacent, and part of their garden has been sectioned off with a sitting-out area and a natural, wooden, children’s play area for visitors to enjoy. The church at Martin which can be accessed directly from the property gardens, dates from Norman times, although much of its fabric is 14th century, and the village green still has the village pump; the base of the 15th century village cross can also be seen here. The area is renowned for its excellent walking - the chalk grasslands of Martin Down, 300 yards away, are a national nature reserve and there are several bridle paths which offer superb riding as well. Princess Cottage offers an ideal holiday retreat for couples or small families wishing to explore the area. The cathedral cities of Salisbury and Winchester, Southampton, with its maritime history and ferries to the Isle of Wight, Poole and Bournemouth, with its sandy beaches, are all within easy driving distance. Visit the New Forest and its many attractions, including Beaulieu Palace, Exbury Gardens and Bucklers Hard, as well as many cycling and horse riding trails. Stabling for 4 horses is available (at cost), as well as a field behind the property, for guests wishing to bring their own mounts. Beach 15 miles. Shop 100 yards, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

All on ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen with wooden floor. 2 bedrooms: 1 double with en-suite shower room and toilet, 1 twin. Shower room with toilet. Most rooms with beams.

Friendly, helpful but not intrusive hosts. The cottage served as a warm, well equipped base for exploring the local area. Plenty to do, particularly if you enjoy walking and cycling and there are some very pretty little towns and villages.

My wife, daughter (3) and I spent a week at this cottage. Lovely setting and friendly owners. Very quiet location and picturesque. 7 miles to the nearest coop but local shop 2 minutes walk with basics available. Be aware there is only one communal space which includes the kitchen. Good size but worth bearing in mind.

Lovely, comfortable cottage for a family of four to stay and perfectly placed to explore the New Forest and the South Coast.

The owners are lovely people but unfortunately a lot of attention to detail was missing. The cottage is a modernised barn but it opens onto a rather scruffy yard with stabling /out buildings which are very untidy. There is a garden behind the outbuildings but again garden furniture left something to be desired. There was a shortage of crockery for 4 people and whilst we were there the water had insufficient pressure to run 2 showers etc although this was rectified after a tap had to be replaced.Despite the above we still enjoyed our holiday but felt with just a little more it would have been very good.

Great weekend, lovely cottage but the bedrooms a bit small.
