Visit England ROSE award winner 2017

Built around 1550 with a flint and brick extension added in Victorian times, Portland Cottage has been carefully renovated to ensure that it offers everything a discerning guest could need without losing any of its charm. Beautifully presented, it has been lovingly restored by an interior designer who has added lots of wonderful bespoke touches, while creating a light and airy getaway. The cottage was originally built as a private dwelling, which was actually used as the local brew house where the tenant sold home brewed ales to the passing farm workers. You can just picture them calling in to have their jugs filled with ale after a long day ploughing and harvesting the surrounding fields, which look the same today as they did over 400 years ago. The adjoining cottage was the local bakery, so the air would have been filled with the most wonderful aromas of beer brewing and bread baking. Portland Cottage was originally part of the Townshend Estate and has strong links to the agricultural revolution as it was Turnip Townshend who invented the 4 crop rotation system that is still used today. Located within the pretty hamlet of Helhoughton, the links to history are all still there, with a beautiful church dating back to the 14th century, and the surrounding meadows and woodlands which are still privately owned by the Townshend family. Locally, you will find beautiful beaches and coastal towns and villages including Wells-next-the-Sea, with its beautiful quay, Blakeney and Hunstanton, with its long stretch of sandy beach. Those looking for stately homes and National Trust properties will find the Sandringham Estate, Holkham Hall and Blickling Hall all within easy reach. With Norfolk being described as ‘the bird watching capital of England’, it is also needless to say there are wildlife watching opportunities galore to be had. Add in great cycle routes and walks and lots of local attractions and places to eat, and you will see why this is such a popular part of Norfolk to visit. Thanks to Portland Cottage and its traditional wood-burning stove, high quality beds and Egyptian cotton sheets, you will be able to relax and unwind after a busy day. Beach 9 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 3½ miles.

The cottage was a great base for exploring and had everything we needed and more. Thank you for the welcome treats - we made short work of the biscuits and fresh juice!

Superb cottage, every piece of equipment we could possibly need (including a food processor, which we used, as we’re keen cooks), beautifully decorated, warm and comfortable, absolutely fabulous. We will definitely return.

Lovely homely cosy cottage with a pretty private garden. This was our second holiday here and it was just as good as the first. Would highly recommend.

This cottage is stylish yet comfortable and very welcoming. The owners have decorated it to a high standard with lovely touches. The cottage is well located and the owners have gone to a lot of effort to provide helpful and interesting information about the cottage, the village and the surrounding area. The cottage is well located and we discovered a part of the country which was new to us. We were impressed with both the cottage and the area. It's ideally located if you like walking, cycling, good food and great pubs. Whilst we were delighted to have good weather we were pleased when the weather turned cold so we could enjoy curling up on the comfy sofa in front of the log burner!

Spent a lovely week at Portland Cottage, even though the weather was not the best, was nice to come back to this cosy place we called home for the week. We had a call a couple days before our holiday from the owner, which was nice. He explained that he treated the cottage more as a home, than holiday let, & he was right, everything you could think of is there. Even down to jars in the bathroom, with designer shower gel, (we found some Molten Brown) cotton wool, etc. All rooms are beautiful, lovely bathroom, with heated floor, comfortable beds, with lovely white bedding, we couldn't ask for more, would definatly recommend, best cottage we have ever stayed in.

It was everything I wanted and more. Really liked the folder laying out where everything was and how the cottage looked before its renovation. Everything I needed was in the cottage and the welcome package was very nice, too. I've stayed at many cottages and this is one of the best ones I've ever stayed in.
