Description

Poachers Cottage provides a peaceful, countryside retreat as a excellent holiday base to explore the surrounding area.

This pair of garden cottages are set in the grounds of the Jacobean Manor House - Thickwood House, dating back to the 1700’s. During the centuries it grew to become one of the most prosperous farms in the area, and its present owners maintain the stunning gardens and outbuildings in keeping with the house. The cottages were sympathetically converted from a Cotswold stone byre, and retain many traditional features. Cosy and comfortable, and with views over the magnificent garden and orchard, they provide a peaceful, countryside retreat and an excellent holiday base from which to explore the surrounding countryside and picturesque villages. Nearby Castle Combe is said to be the prettiest village in England, also famous for its motor racing circuit. Lacock is another picture postcard village, well loved by film-makers for its historical streets and buildings. Lacock Abbey was used in the Harry Potter films. This AONB enjoys easy access to the Cotswolds, Salisbury Plain and the Marlborough Downs offering stunning scenery for walking and cycling, and the Georgian Spa city of Bath is within half an hour’s drive. Shops and pub 1 mile.

All on ground floor: Living/dining room with beams. Kitchen. 1 twin bedroom. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Both properties: Oil central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. DVD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Laundry service available at cost. Large shared, lawned garden with patio and furniture. Ample parking. No smoking. No children under 12 years. NB: Deep water feature in grounds.

A very nice stay in a lovely cottage, well equipped and ran by honest genuine people. Local to Bath, Lacock and surrounding places of interest. A nice walk to the local pubs was well worth the effort. Highly recommended indeed.

We stayed here with our dog Dolly for a week in early December. The hosts were kind and hospitable & very helpful with local information. The cottage is warm and comfortable with most things you need for a good weeks holiday. Try to arrive in the light as it can be tricky to find in the dark and the approach roads are very narrow. Lots of good local walks for the dog and us, friendly locals and a nice pub in the village about 20 mins walk away. Bring supplies as the nearest large shops are Bath or Chippenham - Morrisons in Bath is good for shopping as you get 3hrs to park and can walk into the city ( about 15 mins). If you are looking for a modern, stylish up to the minute place with good WiFi etc, this isn't it ! If you are looking for a quiet place to relax & kick back it certainly is.
