Scottish Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Perfect for that romantic break, and also complete with wheelchair access and an open fire.

"Close to sandy beaches and picturesque villages – with golf at St Andrews nearby . . ."

Ideal for family gatherings, special occasions, select weddings or corporate events, Pitcairlie House can accommodate up to 21 guests in five delightful properties (all graded Visit Scotland ‘4 Star’ and awarded the Green Tourism Silver Award) - each apartment being entirely individual and self-contained. All five splendid holiday properties enjoy shared use of a superb indoor heated swimming pool and sauna - they all have an internal access to the swimming pool (except Kudu UED, reached along the verandah).
They are set in a lovely rural situation, 3 miles south of Newburgh on the Firth of Tay, and 18 miles from Perth, in a 120-acre wildlife haven of woods, streams and rolling hills. Eland (UEB, sleeps 6), Sable (UEC, sleeps 4), Kudu (UED, sleeps 4), The Garden Apartment (UEE, sleeps 3) have been formed within a large Victorian wing of the owners’ 16th-century country mansion, while the Lodge (SBK, sleeps 4) is set on the edge of woodland by the end of the drive. Just 2 miles away is the attractive village of Auchtermuchty, while medieval Falkland with its historic palace is only 2 miles farther on. Both villages offer a selection of shops, inns and restaurants. Shops 2 miles.

Situated just beyond the pillared entrance to the main house, backed by pretty woodland, this cottage is just 5 minutes’ walk to the main house where there is ample parking for easy access to the pool and other facilities. This delightful, south-facing cottage is an ideal venue for honeymooners or a romantic break. It meets the Visit Scotland ‘4 Star’ standard, provides convenient ground floor accommodation with wheelchair access (National Accessibility Category 3), and has its own garden and patio. Large sitting-room with open fire and separate dining area. Well-fitted kitchen with door to garden and patio. Double bedroom with en-suite shower room and toilet. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with toilet.

When we arrived at the cottage it was freezing. We phoned the owner as we couldn't find how to switch the heating on. We were told there was a box in the kitchen. As we still could not locate this we phoned the owner again and she said she would come down. She came with a key to open the box with which we could switch the heating on. She informed us that usually the heating would not come on until 4pm and if we lit the fire this soon warmed the place up. This was a week in February where the temperature rarely got above freezing outside all week. On the day we arrived the children were excited to go to the pool. When we arrived at the pool it was freezing and the heating was not on in the pool room at all. The sauna was also out of order. The heating in the room was then put on for the rest of the week but the pool temperature was too low for the adults to feel comfortable in the water. The sauna intermittently worked all week but kept "tripping" and needed the handyman to sort it out on a number of occasions. The owner explained that it was very expensive to heat the pool or the room to a higher temperature! Overall these aspects of the trip mean we will definitely not be back and would not recommend this accommodation to other guests.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are disappointed that you did not fully enjoy your stay at The Lodge, especially as you had assured us that everything was ok and you were happy with your stay. At your request, the heating was switched on to constant and as you can imagine, this is not something that we would normally do. Most guests do not require the heating to be on all the time, whatever the weather! A locked box has been installed over the heating controls in The Lodge however, if the heating needs to be adjusted, guests are more than welcome to contact me and I can pop round to the property to make the required adjustments. The swimming pool is heated to 30 degrees and we have never received a complaint previously regarding the pool temperature. The sauna is brand new and unfortunately, we did have some teething problems with the heater controls, but this was fixed whilst you were in residence. Overall, we are really disappointed in your experience as all other feedback has been positive. We had hoped our rapid response to your requests demonstrated our commitment to you as our guests and I’m unsure of what more could have been done to maximise your holiday experience at The Lodge.
