English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Situated literally on the beach front, Pirates Cove can sleep up to seven guests and is fantastic for the whole family.

"Sands flanked by rock, with wooded cliffs above – true Devon coastal character . . ."

The wooded cliffs at Bolt Tail form a backdrop to this sandy cove on what is renowned as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South Hams. These holiday cottages are set within 100 yards of the safe sandy beach – an unrivalled position for enjoying the seaside, but also perfect for fishing, sailing and water-skiing (with a dinghy-launching slip 200 yards away, and facilities for larger boats at nearby Salcombe). The cottages are in the centre of this charming seaside village, with its pretty thatched cottages, inns, restaurants and small shop within a short walk. The South Devon Coastal Footpath winds along the cliffs and through Hope Cove between Salcombe and Thurlestone, with opportunities for magnificent walking amongst glorious coastal scenery.
The maritime attractions continue slightly further afield. Salcombe, 4 miles away, is one of the most prestigious sailing centres in the country. It offers extensive sandy beaches, too, and a wide choice of fascinating shops, boutiques and restaurants in its quaintly winding narrow streets. The estuary here is a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured craft of all kinds at their moorings – a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. Thurlestone, 2 miles to the west, can be reached either by car or via the coastal path. It boasts yet more expanses of golden sands, a regular feature of this lovely coastline. But, in addition, it has a superb cliff-top links golf course, edged by sandy coves, tennis courts and picturesque streets of thatched cottages overlooking the bay. Kingsbridge, the ‘capital’ of the South Hams, has a good choice of interesting shops, a museum and a sports centre with squash, badminton and bowling. Boating and diving trips can be arranged in the Salcombe Estuary, and boats are available for hire. Within easy driving distance are the historic cities of Plymouth and Exeter and Kitley Caves. The wide open spaces and breathtaking scenery of the Dartmoor National Park are less than an hour by car, and there are many National Trust properties, stately homes and interesting gardens within a short drive. Anchor Cottages are set in a little terrace in the village. They have been designed to offer ‘upside-down’ accommodation, with first floor living rooms. Comfortably furnished, each has a small first floor sitting-out area with furniture. They are ideally located for a Devon holiday by the sea. Shop/P.O. 50 yards.

There are three bedrooms on the ground floor; one double, one twin and one small single. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Open-tread stairs to first floor: Spacious open-plan living/dining room with quality double sofa-bed (for +2), elec fire, dining table and compact fitted kitchen area. I booked this property a couple of weeks before our stay in August 2016. Booking at short notice meant there was limited choice available but Pirate's Cove ticked the boxes of being near beaches and pubs. The property itself is spacious and arranged with bedrooms on the ground floor and living area above. It was comfortable enough but not luxurious but that was fine as we were out most of the time. There were three bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin, 1 single) so to sleep 7 two people have to use the sofabed in the lounge (this was pretty good as a bed). The kitchen was ok and my mother-in-law managed to cook a Sunday roast so ok for most requirements. The bathroom was large but pretty tired and only having one toilet was not ideal for a party of seven. The lounge had a decent television and DVD player. The TV could accept USB sticks to play videos too. There was no Internet available so we used the free wifi at the nearby pub when we needed to go on-line. There was no mobile signal either although five minutes walk up a hill resolved this. There is a balcony at the rear of the property which adds useful space but has no view and had not been swept for some time. The exterior of the property could have done with a good clean. The interior was however well cleaned before our arrival. The front of the property looks out onto a car park. If you crane your neck you can just see the sea. However, once outside the property you get good views within seconds. Electricity is not included is the rental price. You have to read the meter in the box on the front exterior wall on arrival and again on departure and perform some calculations then leave the money (cash or cheque) in the property. Our cost for a week in Summer was approx £13 so not outrageous but a pain to read the meter and work out the cost. I really think that electricity should be included in the rental price. Finally the parking was a bit hit and miss. There was an area reserved for the five cottages which could accommodate five cars. There was also space for a vehicle in front of each cottage. However we were never able to park two cars there as the spaces were occupied. I am not sure whether some guests had more than two cars per cottage or whether non-residents were using the spaces. I would be useful to have a designated space for each cottage in the parking area to avoid this.

Great location as it's just a short walk to the beach which ment we could come back as and when we needed. Great for families with young children like ours. Plenty of space for us; a family of 6. Hope Cove is so beautiful as well.
