English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Offering ground floor accommodation for two, with its own private garden area as well as access to 12-acres of gardens and orchards.

Sunnymead Cottages (ref PGZ and PHA) are situated in the High Weald village of High Hurstwood, a designated AONB. Set in a landscape of undulating pastures, they provide a peaceful retreat. Converted to a very high standard and adjoining one another; Pippins provides ground floor accommodation and Russets has ground and first floor accommodation. They lie at the end of 220 yards of private drive, amid 12 acres of gardens and orchards in the grounds of the owners’ house. The grounds are a haven for wildlife; birds, deer and badgers are regular visitors. Each cottage has its own garden area in which to sit out and unwind. The nearby Bluebell Steam Railway makes frequent journeys from Sheffield Park, with its period railway station. A great day out can also be enjoyed in Ashdown Forest, under two miles away and a refuge for wildlife. It offers opportunities for walking, riding and picnics. If guests do not feel like taking the car out, there is direct access onto a public footpath just outside the garden and the Vanguard Way is only 10 minutes’ walk away. Local wines can be sampled at various vineyards in the vicinity. There is easy access to historic houses including Glyndebourne Opera House, the spa town Tunbridge Wells and 1066 country. There is also much to see along the coast where shops, bars and restaurants beckon in Brighton and Eastbourne. The nearest railway station is only 6 minutes’ drive with direct access to London in just over one hour. Shop 2 miles, pub serving good food just a 5-minute walk.

Russets (PGZ) and Pippins (PHA) can be booked together to accommodate up to 4 guests.

Spent 4 nights at Pippins with my 5 year old daughter for a half term break. The cottage and all the equipment was spotless - I couldn’t find a spec of dust anywhere! Really cosy and comfortable. Very welcoming and helpful host. Lovely location and very peaceful. No shop in walking distance but loads around within 10 mins drive. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

Michael, Spain. This is the sixth time that I have stayed at Pippins and, as on all other occasions the cottage was very clean and really comfortable. The furnishings and fittings are top-of-the-range -- nice extra-large bed with crisp white sheets. TV, DVD and radio equipment is easy to use and all worked well. There is good internet connection via WiFi but, sadly, as the cottage is located in a very remote, but beautiful part of Sussex, there is NO mobile network available. But if you absolutely must phone home, you can always use Skype. A super welcome awaits by way of some home made cakes and a bottle of Cava. What better way to start a holiday break?

This is one of the best cottages we have stayed in. So well decorated and equipped and in such a beautiful setting. So peaceful. Joan was so kind and we had cake and tea on arrival. She even bought us a Radio Times, introducing us to Line of Duty. We are catching up! We will definitely ensure we go again. The Ashdown Forest was so beautiful, with links with Winnie the Pooh. A wonderful pub in the village and one of the best Indian restaurants, in Crowborough. Plenty of walks direct from the cottage. We may have only been an hour and a half away from home but really was away from it all and such a good holiday. Thank you.

Response on behalf of the owner:- Thank you for giving us such a wonderful review. It makes all our hard work really worth while. We are very lucky to be situated so close to the beautiful Ashdown Forest and to have so many National Trust so close by. Many thanks, Joan
