English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Pillar Box House boasts a relaxing hot tub in the fully enclosed, sunny garden, nestled in the beautiful Norfolk countryside.

This striking pink, detached, timber framed, period house is rich in character, with oak beams, wooden floors and an inglenook fireplace. From the moment you step in, you are greeted with an impressive reception hall. The house is set over three floors, offering comfortable accommodation with a spacious, beamed living room and an open fire, set in an inglenook fireplace. There is a well equipped kitchen and dining area with a wood burner which is ideal for hosting and entertaining. The master bedroom suite occupies the top floor and boasts its own en-suite and dressing room with enough space for all four bedrooms. A stable door opens onto the fully enclosed, sunny garden, complete with a hot tub and patio with furniture, as well as a lawned garden at the side of the property.

Pillar Box House is situated in the small, rural hamlet of Hackford, neighbouring the market town of Wymondham and the pretty Georgian village of Hingham. The parish of Hackford is listed within the Domesday Book, and has Saxon origins. Together with nearby parishes, there is interesting archaeology, with evidence of activity from the Palaeolithic Period to modern day. The city of Norwich is 13 miles away for excellent shopping, two indoor malls, theatre, castle museum, cathedral, pubs, fine restaurants, market square, cafés and art galleries. The surrounding countryside provides endless opportunities for cycling and walking. Thetford Forest is 19 miles away and boasts designated picnic areas, footpaths and cycle trails, challenging cycling routes, climbing and adventure activities. The Pingo Trail, an extraordinary and fascinating walk, and Thompson Park are just 10 miles away. The pretty Georgian market town of Hingham, 2 miles, is steeped in history with a small selection of shops and a good pub around the village green. Wymondham, 3 miles, is an attractive historic market town with many shops, railway station, cafés, pubs, and a leisure centre with a spectacular spa. The massive towers of Wymondham Abbey are set against the green fields of the Tiffey Valley. Barnham Broom is 3 miles with a golf course and leisure club. For keen anglers, there are fishing lakes available at Hingham (£6 per day). Should you prefer to spend a day on the beach, the North Norfolk Coast can be reached within a 40-minute drive. From the doorstep, public footpaths and extensive dog walking are in abundance. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

On arrival we noticed a hamper; enough for an evening meal and snacks in case you arrived too late to go shopping, plus some emergency bottles of wine, with a nice welcome message - nice touch. The house was warm, clean and comforting with plenty of clean towels and throws. The beds were really comfortable and we slept like a log, literally. Our friends used the outdoor tub and before we left someone was there to clean - so well maintained.

Response on behalf of the owner. So pleased you had a lovely time with us here in Norfolk. We hope to welcome you back within the not too distant future.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you so much for your lovely comments. As you can imagine, the house is booked regularly by guests who like to stay somewhere with lots of character and with plenty of room for 8 adults. It’s a great house for family gatherings too, and has been enjoyed by many. We feel very lucky to have so many lovely visitors that appreciate the quirkiness of this lovely old property. Of course we look forward to welcoming you back at any time.

The cottage was lovely, the only thing that we found unfortunate was the road outside which was very fast and very busy. Otherwise we had a lovely weekend and the house was lovely

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your kind comments. The road at the front of the house is actually unclassified i.e. not even a B Road and as Hackford is a very small Hamlet, with a population of very few, the road is only generally used by those that reside nearby, or that are on the school run to/from the local Primary School at the top of the hill in nearby Wicklewood. As is the case, it tends only to be at its busiest for a very short period, first thing in the morning and again mid/late afternoon. Nevertheless we are pleased that you enjoyed both the house and your stay with us in Norfolk.

We had the most amazing time at Pillar box house. It's one of the best holiday cottages we have stayed in. The owners have really made an effort to make it luxurious and it's just cramed with old features. The kitchen was so well equipped and after initial concerns, we mastered the everhot range. It's location was good for us, not over looked but just a short drive to amenities and well place to visit so many lovey parts of Norfolk. We found the owners lovely and will definitely be booking again

    Response from:
