Situated in a quiet residential area just a five minute drive from the beautiful beach of La Grande Côte, this practical house is all on one level above a garage. With a large enclosed garden, ideal for children to play in, it also enjoys a south facing terrace, ideal for outdoor dining. The French rustic interior is comfortable, with an open fire and several French windows opening on to the terrace. In the centre of the village is a good bakery serving traditional French baguettes, and in the summer there is a morning market. At Grande Côte there are plenty of good restaurants overlooking the sea, as well as tennis and windsurfing. There is also the opportunity to play golf just 3kms away. To the south is the resort of Royan, famous for its gardens, casino and thalassotherapy, and also convenient for boat trips to nearby islands and the prestigious wine-growing area of the Médoc, which also boasts many stunning châteaux. A short drive is the town of La Palmyre, with its market, restaurants and superb zoo.

The location, in a small village, is very handy for the beach. The house was clean and the owners, who do not live locally, were very helpful and greeted us on arrival. The property is a good size and has a lovely sun terrace. The beds were comfortable and it was a help to have them made up. The kitchen is a little old fashioned and in need of modernization. De-cluttering might help. The dish washer is still temperamental as we found on a previous visit and the oven, although old, does cook well. The fridge, whilst large, only has a small 2* freezing compartment which could be a problem for a large family in August. The lounge/diner is a good size but unfortunately lacks the 'cosy' feel. The open fire cannot be used and the central heating is by prior arrangement. Fortunately the weather was good for September but in cold/wet weather the lounge would not be inviting to sit. There is now a modern TV but still no DVD player.

We spent a week in Pat-Stef and had a great holiday. It is quiet and peaceful and very convenient to access both the forest and beaches. Lots of interesting places to visit within an hour's drive. the Nauzan beach was superb. Safe and sandy and very sheltered. We drove up to the Ile d'Oleron and enjoyed visiting the lighthouse and gardens around it. Brouage takes about 40 mins and is a fortified town of historical interest. La Tremblade was well worth the visit. Quite an unusual sight with all the little huts along the river for the oyster fishermen. There is a small supermarket in the town but a larger Intermarche (hypermarche) is very close to Royan...Vaux-sur-Mer.
