From a touch of luxury to characterful heritage, experience one of our truly inspiring holiday properties.

Just 4 miles from Muncaster Castle, this property is surrounded by pretty gardens with a small stream running through.

The tranquil village of Waberthwaite, spectacularly situated between the mountains and the sea, is the setting for this wonderfully sympathetic barn conversion which has created two stylish holiday cottages featuring vaulted ceilings, original beams and stonework. Surrounded by pretty gardens with a small stream running through, it makes a perfect base for exploring the western Lake District fells, country and coastal walks, and cycle paths. Just 4 miles from Muncaster Castle, gardens and owl sanctuary, and the Ravenglass to Eskdale Miniature Steam Railway, whilst Wastwater (voted Britain’s favourite view 2007) is a few miles further. The 18th century Georgian port of Whitehaven to the north has a conservation harbour and marina, the Beacon Heritage Centre plus shops and restaurants, or if relaxation is a preferred option, simply unwind on the sunny patio with a good book. Shop 20 yards, pub 100 yards.

Step to entrance. Kitchen with vaulted ceiling and breakfast area. Separate toilet. Three steps to lower ground floor: Two double bedrooms. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. First floor: Living/dining room with beams and vaulted ceiling.

Orchard Cottage is a pretty property in a quiet hamlet. Its location provides easy access to the western lakes and to interesting coastal towns and villages. The cottage is generally comfortable, but the dining chairs could do with replacing as none of them are comfortable to sit on. We used cushions from the settee for padding. The mattress topper is a bit soft and very warm which caused us to wake up every night in a sweat. There was no protector on the topper which was stained. The tea pot is an absolutely hopeless pourer and needs replaced, and there is still a need for a clothes horse--it is the Lake District after all, where are folk meant to hang wet coats etc. to dry after a day in the rain, never mind any washing? Despite these small grumbles, we had a lovely holiday based at Orchard Cottage. The countryside is beautiful, and there is so much to see and do. We would happily stay there again and recommend the cottage to friends. Thank you for the bottle of wine on arrival. It was much appreciated. P.S. Key safe not very easy to find/access.

Response on behalf of the owner: Thank you very much for your comments and so glad you had a lovely holiday in Orchard Cottage. We would look forward to welcoming you back and thank you if you recommend us to friends. The mattress protector has been replaced with new and we have provided a new clothes horse for drying clothes, although there are coat hooks in the kitchen and a washing line is provided. Previously, the wire clothes horse generated so many complaints from visitors about a wire puzzle we discarded this. The dining chairs are being replaced, progressively and we will check out the teapot, which is commercial crockery.

A lovely quiet cottage in a small village location. Fully fitted out and in excellent condition. We would definitely recommend it for anyone seeking a quiet location away from it all.

Response on behalf of the owner; We are so glad that you enjoyed your holiday and we agree the Muncaster area is an undiscovered gem in the Lake District.
