English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Discover Somerset from this character barn conversion, with many attractions including the Cheddar Gorge, Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury.

This single-storey converted barn lies in the grounds of the owners’ home, amongst 3 acres of orchards and ponds. Set back from the road passing through the village, it truly feels rural surrounded by countryside, and is a stylish and luxurious base from which to explore the area. Great care and attention has been lavished on restoring and decorating the barn, with reclaimed floorboards throughout and some original stone walls kept intact. The secluded and private outside seating area overlooks the field beyond. The village of Meare is set on the beautiful Somerset Levels, by the River Brue. It is 3 miles west of Glastonbury and 10 miles from Wells, England’s smallest city. The area is famous for its nature reserves, a favourite of walkers and birdwatchers. Many people come here to watch the murmuration of starlings from autumn to spring. Both bitterns and otters have been successfully reintroduced onto the Ham Wall Reserve. Nearby Glastonbury has many visitor attractions, from the tor to the abbey, the array of individual shops with spiritual themes, and the annual music festival a few miles outside the town. The city of Wells has a magnificent cathedral with a 13th-century working clock, the cobbled medieval street and the Bishop’s Palace, as well as a lively weekly market in its cobbled square. Also, visit Cheddar Gorge and the caves at Wookey Hole and Clark’s retail village at Street. The cities of Bath and Bristol are within an easy drive, as is the county town of Taunton. The coastal resorts of west Somerset and north Devon can be reached within an hour. Shop, pub and restaurant 1/2 mile.

Very comfortable and cosy cottage. Made for a very relaxing weekend. Will definitely be returning. Steve and Lesley very friendly and accommodating hosts, nothing was too much trouble, when the snow fell, offered us extra logs for the fire and any assistance we needed with getting to the shop for extra supplies. A really good home from home to explore further afield

We absolutely loved our short stay here. The owners were welcoming and the barn was pure heaven. We stayed in at nights by the fire and enjoyed the comfort of the barn. We tried to find the local pubs but most were closed during the day and so that is the only downside- and certainly not that much of a negative that we would not go back. Thoroughly recommend this holiday cottage.

Orchard Barn is superbly situated to explore the Levels, the Mendips, Chew Valley and Blagdon Lakes, Wells, Bath, Glastonbury, Bristol and the coast. The cottage is very comfortable with all amenities, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have no hesitation in recommending Orchard Barn.

We are two couples who have been holidaying together in self catering cottages for many years. Our week at Orchard Barn was to enable us to enjoy a bird watching week on the Somerset Levels. The barn didn't disappoint even if the weather did! The National Trust properties of Lytes Cary, Montecute and Tintinhull were within easy reach and we also enjoyed a walk around the village. The private sitting out area provided a comfortable retreat at the end of a busy day (when it wasn't raining!(

Orchard Barn is in a beautiful setting in the village of Meare. It is extremely well equipped, no quibbling over extra toilet rolls, washing up liquid, tea towels or kitchen roll. It is all provided. Along with a fabulous welcome basket of eggs, milk, cake and biscuits. Considering we only stayed 2 nights, it was extremely generous. Heating and hot water were plentiful and easy to access and the gardens were gorgeous to sit in and enjoy the sun. No big shops in village but Glastonbury is 5min drive. Supermarkets, takeaways and amenities available there. All in all, a lovely place to spend a weekend and would definitely stay again.
