Description

In the surrounding area, there are many tourist attractions to enjoy. After a day out, why not dine alfresco with the BBQ.

In a tranquil village setting, 2 miles from the sandy beach at Paignton, these three adjoining single-storey holiday cottages, imaginatively converted from former farm buildings, retain splendid original roof beams and stone walls (references 29076, 29077 and 29078). Adjacent to the owner’s home, around the same pretty courtyard garden with a pond and fountain, they are attractively furnished in ‘New England’ style. The South Hams boasts the mildest climate in Britain. Paignton, 2 miles, and Torquay, 4 miles, has sailing, tennis and sports centre and coloured lights festoon the harbour by night. It has many good sandy beaches, giving it an almost Mediterranean feel. Inland is the medieval town of Totnes, with a castle and 16th-century buildings, and once a week, there is an Elizabethan and farmers’ market. From the quayside, there are boat trips down the River Dart to Dartmouth; the South Devon Railway runs steam trains to Buckfastleigh and along the coast to Kingswear, opposite Dartmouth. Take a ferry across to visit Dartmouth with its array of shops and restaurants, take a walk around the castle and enjoy one of the tea shops for a Devon cream tea. Within easy reach is the spectacular Dartmoor National Park. There are many tourist attractions close by including Agatha Christie’s summer home, Babbacombe’s model village and the award-winning Paignton Zoo. Away from the coast, visit Tavistock, where you can enjoy some dramatic scenery. There are many NT properties and plenty of surfing, swimming, sailing and angling. Torquay has a lot to offer, such as the Living Coasts, where the penguins wander freely, and the theatre which has shows all year round. The Roman city of Exeter is 15 miles, whilst bustling Torbay encompasses Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Visit the yachting marina and a selection of fine gardens, in addition to Kent’s Cavern where the remains of some of Britain’s very earliest inhabitants were found. Discover the castles, abbeys, wildlife parks, steam trains and model railways, all within easy reach with many open throughout the year. Shop 700 yards, pub and restaurant 400 yards.

whilst the toilets and bedding were clean, we all felt that the towels were old and very hard to the touch, but mostly we felt that the cottage was tired and needed a update, this included the windows being cleaned as they had newish net curtained put up but this covered the old and very dirty windows. Also the whole cottage needed a good clean and dusting there was cobwebs all over the cottage, not just up high but on the shirting boards. sorry to be negative about the cottage.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are obviously disappointed that you had such a negative reaction especially compared to our other reviews. We underwent our annual inspection just a few days before (June 3rd) and in all the sections of the report were awarded 4* out of 5*. To the specifics, it is a shame you did not mention at any point when we talked, about your concerns about cleanliness, as this is a matter I would need to take up with our cleaning team if they are not doing their job correctly. Cobwebs are a natural part of living in the Devon Countryside and we do our best to make sure where possible they are removed on a weekly basis. It is very unusual for cobwebs to be found on skirting boards and had we been informed we could have taken remedial action. As to the décor, the cottage is decorated deliberately in an "English Country" style. Only last year was these features enhanced and the décor can be seen from the photos on the website. The windows indeed are due for an upgrade (they are not dirty but the paint is starting to flake). However this cannot be done until there is a substantial break in bookings because of the odours that this will create. Unfortunately (or from our perspective fortunately) Mill is one of the most regularly booked of our three little cottages so we have to wait. We have also received many positive comments in our guest book. Mill is, as it states, a country cottage and not an apartment or hotel. In any event we hope these failings as you perceive them did not spoil your holiday.

We had a lovely short break at Mill Cottage and were made very welcome. It is a lovely cosy cottage, a great size for the four of us. The only thing I would say is that it would be nice to have a few more than four of everything and possible a couple of bigger pans. I struggled to make a spaghetti Bolognese and pasta as we only had small pans. However, I would definitely stay again.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for taking the time to post a comment about your stay at Mill Cottage I am so glad you had a good time during your stay with us. Regarding the comments about cutlery and utensils, we provide what is suggested by the management company however we do find your thoughts very useful and can see your point of view; hence we will be taking steps to address this in the coming weeks. We have just undergone our annual inspection (not long after your stay) and were found to be worthy of the 4 star with which we were awarded. I do hope our failings as you perceive them did not stop you from enjoying this lovely part of the country.

Very nice cottage and hosts. The area had plenty to keep us fit and busy.
