Jasmine Cottage is ideal for a couple or small family and with many attractions nearby, you’ll be spoiled for choice!

In a tranquil village setting, 2 miles from the sandy beach at Paignton, these three adjoining single-storey holiday cottages, imaginatively converted from former farm buildings, retain splendid original roof beams and stone walls (references 29076, 29077 and 29078). Adjacent to the owner’s home, around the same pretty courtyard garden with a pond and fountain, they are attractively furnished in ‘New England’ style. The South Hams boasts the mildest climate in Britain. Paignton, 2 miles, and Torquay, 4 miles, has sailing, tennis and sports centre and coloured lights festoon the harbour by night. It has many good sandy beaches, giving it an almost Mediterranean feel. Inland is the medieval town of Totnes, with a castle and 16th-century buildings, and once a week, there is an Elizabethan and farmers’ market. From the quayside, there are boat trips down the River Dart to Dartmouth; the South Devon Railway runs steam trains to Buckfastleigh and along the coast to Kingswear, opposite Dartmouth. Take a ferry across to visit Dartmouth with its array of shops and restaurants, take a walk around the castle and enjoy one of the tea shops for a Devon cream tea. Within easy reach is the spectacular Dartmoor National Park. There are many tourist attractions close by including Agatha Christie’s summer home, Babbacombe’s model village and the award-winning Paignton Zoo. Away from the coast, visit Tavistock, where you can enjoy some dramatic scenery. There are many NT properties and plenty of surfing, swimming, sailing and angling. Torquay has a lot to offer, such as the Living Coasts, where the penguins wander freely, and the theatre which has shows all year round. The Roman city of Exeter is 15 miles, whilst bustling Torbay encompasses Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Visit the yachting marina and a selection of fine gardens, in addition to Kent’s Cavern where the remains of some of Britain’s very earliest inhabitants were found. Discover the castles, abbeys, wildlife parks, steam trains and model railways, all within easy reach with many open throughout the year. Shop 700 yards, pub and restaurant 400 yards.

Double bed nearly the same width as the room, making it very difficult to get in and out. Both beds incredibly uncomfortable - mattress springs could be felt through the bottom sheet. First time in 32 years we had to sleep separately. The amount of 'don't do this and must do that' regulations were unbelievable. Notices everywhere ranging from 'must shut the gate' to 'don't cook smelly foods'. It really spoilt our holiday and made us feel most unwelcome. Knowing that CCTV was operating in courtyard, we did not want to sit outside. Heating entirely under the control of the owner so sometimes we baked and other times we froze ! Despite the pleasant, tranqil, setting we would not recommend this cottage to anyone.

    Response from: Administrator

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your comments regarding your stay at Jasmine Cottage. I’m sure you would have seen from the comments in the guest book that the majority of people who have stayed there have found it comfortable and an enjoyable stay. In response to your specific queries, we obviously cannot control the size of the rooms. When we refurbished Jasmine we sought views and the majority came back with that they would prefer a bigger bed rather than a smaller one in the reduced space so this is why we have gone in that direction. There is space at both sides of the bed which has been inspected by our area manager and found to be adequate. If there were physical issues why more space was needed then you only had to tell us and we would have been very happy to seek a solution e.g. a change of cottage. The signage around the property is as equally informative as it is “don’t do this”. There have been many instances where unthinking guests have (for instance) cooked curry and the smell has been unable to be removed. This is unfair on those who are following on. Likewise we had one of the large panes of door glass smashed. In these days of Health and Safety and claims for compensation we have to cover all eventualities for insurance purposes. Heating is controlled centrally in all our cottages something we are unable to change however all radiators are fitted with thermostats so there was no need for you to be too hot. If you were cold you only had to ask as all our customers have been happy to do. Regarding the CCTV the law clearly states that cameras cannot overlook patio areas. Add to this we have the system both for your security, safety and insurance needs. The two cameras are focused on the car park and the main gate. No cottages are covered. In all these problems it is a shame that you did not seek to share your concerns at the time as we could have found solutions and allayed your fears which would have meant you could have had a much more enjoyable holiday. You gave us no indication that you found us unsatisfactory, quite the reverse. We are, as the title implies, cottages with all the quirks that this type of property has. Indeed many of our guests come for that very reason and love the cosy nature of the accommodation as can be born out in the comments in our guest books. We are away from the hustle and bustle of the road which gives guests a quiet and relaxing holiday without interruptions from uninvited visitors. The fact that we can offer this whilst being so close to local towns and holiday amenities is also a bonus. We are also pleased that our inspection this week (July 2015) rated us still at 4 stars.
