Description

Old Hollow Cottage is truly a bird lovers’ paradise with the Ribble Estuary Nature Reserve literally on the doorstep.

Situated in the grounds of the owner’s working farm, Old Hollow Cottage is a wing of a larger property and provides cosy and comfortable holiday accommodation. It borders Natural England’s Nature Reserve of 5,000 acres of salt marsh on the Ribble Estuary Nature Reserve. The reserve is one of the UK’s sites for wintering wildfowl, and is literally right on the doorstep with direct access to a designated footpath. With RSPB Hesketh Out Marsh within 2 miles and RSPB Marshside and Martin Mere both within 5 miles, this is the perfect base for nature lovers and bird watchers. The network of footpaths and dedicated cycle routes make this a great destination for those who love the outdoors. This is a great area for cycling and guided cycle tours can be arranged with the owner. There are some great walks from the doorstep and you can cycle into Southport which then connects to the Trans Pennine Trail. There are also 10 golf courses within 10 miles. Whilst the cottage has its own enclosed patio and seating area, guests also have access to the owner’s fantastic garden and summerhouse. With views towards the Pennines, this beautiful garden has a large pond which is home to a couple of resident swans as well as several pieces of sculpture made from driftwood, one of which has been romantically named ‘The Embrace’ by the owner. The Victorian seaside town of Southport which as well as offering lots of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, also has a fairground, cinema, bowling and indoor water park, providing lots of leisure activities for when the weather is not so great. The train station in Southport provides easy access into Liverpool, approximately 30 minutes, with all its museums, theatres, shopping, Liverpool One, Albert Dock, and other attractions too numerous to mention. Trains also operate to the historic city of Chester, approximately 60 minutes. Other places of interest nearby include National Trust’s Rufford Old Hall, 6 miles, Preston ,15 miles, and the coastal town of Formby, a conservation area whose protected pine woods and sand dunes are home to red squirrels and natterjack toads, 15 miles. If you fancy a longer drive, Ribble Valley and the city of Lancaster can both be reached in an hour. Just over an hour’s drive will take you into the southern Lake District or Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Beach 3 miles. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

All on ground floor: Living room. Dining room. Kitchen with tiled floor. 1 double (5ft) bedroom. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Woodburner in living room (initial fuel included). Oil central heating and electricity included (£15per week, £10 per short break November-March). Bed linen and towels included. Freeview TV. Electric cooker. Microwave. Use of washing machine. Dishwasher. Fridge/freezer. Wi-fi. Enclosed patio with sitting-out area and furniture. Lawned garden with summer house and barbecue (shared with owner). Shared barbecue. Parking (2 cars). Cycle store. Table tennis. Pets must be kept on a lead at certain times of year. No smoking. A perfectly relaxing holiday, with a beautifully furnished and equipped cottage. The most friendly and helpful hosts ever. Plenty of wild life and in a picturesque setting. Probably the best cottage we have stayed in. The only downside for some people is using the car to go anywhere. that didn't bother us though. What lovelier way to relax.

Beautiful cottage, stunning gardens, lovely, peaceful and isolated location with the most welcoming hosts you could imagine. Janet and Alex are friendly and fun. Alex delights in involving guests in his activities including bike riding and table tennis. We had a fantastic time and can't wait to go back.

A warm welcome from the owners and a guided tour on the first day, which included seeing day old chicks! This was a lovely cottage, very comfortable and and well equipped and within easy reach of all we wanted to visit. The owners share their beautiful garden and we could sit and watch the wildlife visit. A walk on The Bank was well worth it, wonderful views.

Old Hollow Cottage is a well presented & very comfortable holiday home. We were made to feel very welcome by our lovely hosts from the moment we arrived. It was great being able to use their beautiful garden & enjoy the abundant wildlife. The summerhouse with it's tea making facilities was a real bonus & we also appreciated the easy access to the "Bank" with its estuary walks. There were also lots of interesting places to visit within a few miles. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there & hope to return in the future.

We had a fantastic stay, the hosts were really friendly and welcoming and went the extra mile. The cottage was so comfortable we didn't want to come home. Totally recommend it for a comfortable peaceful stay. A home from home. It is pet friendly with an enclosed courtyard ideal for your dog and sitting out in the summer.

A warm, friendly greeting from the owners. the owner enjoyed informing us about the local area for bird watching, which is why we chose the location. plenty of heating, which is a requirement in the winter months, always warm when we returned from a day out.

We booked and paid for 21 nights. Stayed 7 . Lots of positives. Janet and Alec were friendly and welcoming log fire waiting for us. A few fresh veg left for us. All well equipped with every thing you would need. Just two main negatives for us but this would not be a problem for many staying a few days or a week. Would recommend ...We were waiting for our house to complete. Main reasons why it wasn't suitable were1. Washing machine in owners house. Felt uncomfortable knocking to use it and it was suggested there was a launderette a few miles away. 2 . Had a dog and very stressful when returning from a muddy walk straight into kitchen and then all carpets. Should have washable floors when dog friendly. No Hoover and mop and bucket in the cottage. We left it very clean and tidy considering.
