English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Awash with beams and many other features, this former barn boasts a 40ft galleried living room and lies close to Stow’s market square.

This 16th-century Grade II listed barn has been skilfully converted to provide a unique and outstanding holiday home - with every detail having been taken into consideration from the hand-made door hinges, handles, old flagstones and oak floors, down to two doors made by Mouseman Thompson. Ancient Chinese and Roman pottery feature throughout the house, and in the entrance hall, adding an unusual touch. On the first floor, a spacious 40-foot galleried, beamed living room adds further charm. The house is furnished throughout with interesting antique furniture from the Arts and Crafts era, a movement founded by William Morris.
Old Forge Barn lies within walking distance of Stow market square, where there are excellent restaurants, old inns, galleries and many interesting shops. The towns and villages of the Cotswolds are a delight to tour, with stunning countryside in all directions. Burford has an excellent wildlife park and the pretty town itself is a pleasure to browse around, whilst at Stratford-upon-Avon, daily guided tours are offered to all the places of interest in this World Heritage City of Shakespearian fame. For alternative days out, Oxford is easily accessible, as is Cheltenham. Blenheim Palace is within 30 miles. Shops 400 yards.

Entrance hall with sitting area. Beamed living/kitchen/dining room with wood burner and flagstone floor. Study/well-stocked library. Two double bedrooms, each with en-suite bathroom and shower attachment, each with Jacuzzi bath and toilet. Wet room and toilet. First floor: Forty-foot living room with minstrels gallery, piano, wood-burning stove and vaulted ceiling, Arts and Crafts furniture and rugs on wooden floor. Beamed twin bedroom with low ceiling. Lovely barn, delightful setting, but do not consider staying here in the winter. Yes we were advised it could be chilly, but that means we can snuggle by the fire wrapped up in cozy blankets and retire to beds with warm down comforters or lots of blankets, right? Or shower in a warm bathroom and dry off with a thick warm towel. WRONG! No effort was made to make the barn cozy or even comfortable. There are no extra blankets for the beds, so we piled our coats & jackets on top of ourselves at night. There are no blankets or throws in the living room to snuggle in and the furniture is so dirty you don't really want to spend time there, anyway. The towels are so old and thin they no longer absorb moisture, so now you are not only cold but still wet. And for this we paid a premium because of the time of the year. We had a delightful visit to the castles, manors and museums, but the barn experience was Ritz pricing for Motel 6 quality.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Old Forge Barn is a 17th century Grade II listed historic building. It has been granted 5 star status and meets the 5 star rating requirements necessary to ensure the 5 star status is maintained. I was sorry our guests from California, perhaps more used to warmer climes and modern buildings, were cold when it snowed during their stay. The Barn does have underfloor central heating. There is a wood fire in the drawing room and a supply of wood is provided. Unusually, there is also a wood fire in the kitchen which is thought to have been used for cooking in earlier centuries. It is always hoped that guests will be comfortable and enjoy staying at the Barn and so to ensure this, some extra bedding will be made available.

We only had a problem with the hot water that was solved shortly after it was communicated to the owner. Lights are a bit quirky but by no means a problem. A pleasure to be 2 minutes walk from all amenities in Stow.
