English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Awash with beams and many other features, this former barn boasts a 40ft galleried living room and lies close to Stow’s market square.

This 16th-century Grade II listed barn has been skilfully converted to provide a unique and outstanding holiday home - with every detail having been taken into consideration from the hand-made door hinges, handles, old flagstones and oak floors, down to two doors made by Mouseman Thompson. Ancient Chinese and Roman pottery feature throughout the house, and in the entrance hall, adding an unusual touch. On the first floor, a spacious 40-foot galleried, beamed living room adds further charm. The house is furnished throughout with interesting antique furniture from the Arts and Crafts era, a movement founded by William Morris.
Old Forge Barn lies within walking distance of Stow market square, where there are excellent restaurants, old inns, galleries and many interesting shops. The towns and villages of the Cotswolds are a delight to tour, with stunning countryside in all directions. Burford has an excellent wildlife park and the pretty town itself is a pleasure to browse around, whilst at Stratford-upon-Avon, daily guided tours are offered to all the places of interest in this World Heritage City of Shakespearian fame. For alternative days out, Oxford is easily accessible, as is Cheltenham. Blenheim Palace is within 30 miles. Shops 400 yards.

We had a lovely time at Forge Barn. A great place for our family to get together. It was one of the best holidays according to our grandson.

Fantastic weekend at old forge barn to celebrate my dads 70th birthday . Beautiful old barn large but warm and cosy , never did work out which light switch turned on which light but that wasn't a problem ! Stow is a lovely village and very Christmassy at this time of year . Would recommend old forge barn to any one .

The barn is unusual in many ways... There are two en-suite bedrooms, and neither has a door to the en-suite, so the toilet is effectively in the bedroom. One bedroom is so hot, it's uncomfortable but the windows don't open, so it's unbearable to sleep in with the door closed. Also in the same room the mattress is like lying on concrete. The 'bath'room on the top floor does have a mini bath, only suitable for people 4ft and under and only accessible by sliding in from one end. Not the most practicable. There is only one stand up shower (wet room) in the barn, and with maximum occupancy this can be a bit inconvenient. There are showers in the sunken baths, but no curtains or screens so the en-suite can get a bit wet if you're not careful The light switches take a while to fathom out, although there are plenty of guides to assist. turn on a light in the hallway and both low level lights in a corridor and a far wall in the kitchen illuminate. There were 8 of us in the barn but only place settings for 7, luckily a breadboard makes a perfect placemat. The open fire was amazing, with plenty of wood, and the barn is HUGE so even though we were at maximum occupancy it never felt full or crowded. The location of the barn is excellent and Stow does have a lot to offer with plenty of pubs and restaurants within walking distance, and lots to see and do only a shot drive away.

Overall i would recommend the Old Forge Barn - it has a lovely living room to socialise in and the location is perfect. However, some parts of the barn needed a bit of a clean - there were a lot of cobwebs and the sofas were a bit grubby. Also, one of the showers didn't work so there was often a queue for the wetroom in the morning.

A bar conversion that has a cosy feel, in a perfect location for walking to Stow's bars and restaurants.

Charming , rustic and large accommodation close to the centre of Stow. We really enjoyed our family weekend there and it had great facilities . Confusing light switches and a few cobwebs up high but it is afterall a converted barn and i thought added to the charm of the place!
