English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

With wonderful ¾-acre gardens, this cottage is ideally placed to explore all the beautiful towns and villages of the Cotswolds.

Old Farm Cottage is situated in the charming hamlet of Ablington, just 1 mile from the famous village of Bibury. The property, one of a pair, boasts a wonderful garden which is designed to have three ‘rooms’. The front garden has two lawned areas and lots of shrubs and perennials, and on the wall are two pear trees that fruit well in most years. In the garden at the back of the house, the pergola supports vines and lots of other shrubs, and there are herb pots and sage which guests can pop out of the kitchen to collect. The clematis over the gateway makes the rear garden almost secret. In that garden there is the raspberry patch with two quince, an apple tree and a summerhouse. Bibury is known for its honey-coloured, 17-century stone cottages with steeply pitched roofs. Almost at the centre of Bibury lies the picturesque Arlington Row cottages which were built in 1380 as a monastic wool store. These were converted in the 17th century into dwellings for weavers who supplied cloth for fulling (degreasing) at nearby Arlington Mill. The River Coln, a tributary of the River Thames, flows alongside the main village street. Its water, along with the Bibury Spring, supplies Bibury Trout Farm, founded in 1902 by the famous naturalist Arthur Severn, to stock the local rivers and streams with the native brown trout. There is a 15-century pub with exposed, original ship’s timber beams and blazing log fires, which serves food in the bar and in its separate restaurant area. The nearby trout farm shop is a 15-minute walk, and sells newspapers, milk, bread and other essential things such as wine, sausages, bacon, trout, biscuits etc. There are many other attractions nearby such as Burford, 9 miles, known as the ’Gateway to the Cotswolds, whose church still retains markings from the English Civil War. Cirencester, just 6 miles away, used to be one of the largest Roman cities. Bath, about 40 miles away, is famed for its Roman connections and Georgian streets. Westonbirt, the internationally renowned tree collection and heritage landscape, is also worth visiting. Shop and pub 1 mile.

Lovely cottage in a very quiet location with big amenities being a little distance away. Lots of useful information and leaflets at the cottage to give you ideas what to do in the surrounding area. This was a perfect place to stay if you want a break away from everything and to explore The Cotswolds.

A lovely quiet cottage in a beautiful spot one mile from the tourist honeyspot of Bibury, so far away enough to enjoy the peace. It has a beautiful garden and would be a wonderful place to stay in the summer months when warm enough to sit outside. There was a plethora of good books to read and the cottage is obviously well loved by its owners who have a very good taste in decoration and furniture. There was plenty of hot water and the beds were reasonably comfortable. There were four of us staying for three nights. I think it might feel rather crowded if there were six people staying for a week as two of the bedrooms are quite small and one of them does not have a wardrobe. Although the cottage was clean enough, at some point a really good deep clean should be undertaken which is why I have marked cleanliness as an 8. The kitchen drawers and cupboards in particular could do with attention.
